Port Perry Printing Novice Hockey The Port Perry Printing Muskies won the Otonabee Novice Toumnament played Saturday Feb. 15, by storing two goals in the final two minutes to defeat a strong team from Stirling, Ontario, in the championship game. All the Muskie players should be very proud of themselves as they worked hard to turn in a gutsy final game performance -- their third game in six hours. Port Perry Printing defeated Newmarket 6-2 in the opening game. Matthew MacMaster was very effec- tive, scoring three goals to earn the game MVP award. Ryan Haslam scored twice and Dane Gray, Robert Sheehan and Joe Schembri had strong offensive games. Shane Fisher played steady in goal and Jason Redman did very well defensively as did Matthew Smart. As fate would have it, two Port Perry teams met in the tournament's second round. The Re/max Novices, who played strongly in defeating St. Johns, faced off against their league rival 'Muskies' for a spot in the finals. The game was a hard fought, exciting affair, with both sides having good scoring chances. The Muskies prevailed 4-2 to advance to the next' round. Shane Fischer was outstanding in goal, winning-game MVP for tum- ing aside shot after ghot from deter- mined Re/max pldyers. Michael Wiseman played a strong game defen- sively and added a goal in the second period. Daryl Knight, adam Luke and Matthew MacMaster played well up front, Ryan Haslam had several excel- lent scoring chances but couldn't beat the Re/max goaltender. The Port Perry Printing Muskies played their best all-around team game in the final contest against a very aggressive Stirling team. + The Muskies skated and passed well but Stirling dominated the first period, yet couldn't score as Shane Fisher and his defense -- Dane Gray, Matthew Smart, Michael Wiseman, Jason Redman held firm. Port Perry gained confidence as the game went on, lead by strong per- formances at centre by Ryan Haslam and Matthew MacMaster. The third period opened with the Muskies in front 1-0. They quickly made it 2-0, but Stirling made it 2-1 with three minutes to play in the game to set up a very exciting finish. Hoping to avoid a shoot-out, and urged on by very vocal Port Perry fans, the Muskies took the play to Stirling rather than playing to protect the lead. The players hard work and persis- tence payed off with two goals in the last two minutes to win the champi- onship game 4-1. 30 -- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, February 18, 1992 INDOOR Antiques * Dishes * Sports Cards Flower Arrangements * Wreaths Country Crafts * Native Crafts Woodworking * Fashions * Macrame Jewellery * Craft Supplies Cosmetics and much, much more! Trevor (TJ) Robbins played his best game of the tournament in the final game and his 'go for broke' style earned him the game MVP award. Re/max Novice Hockey Our Re/max Novice Hockey team was shocked and saddened this week by the sudden death of John Jolicoeur, whose son, Beau, plays for Re/max. John was always eager to help out with the hockey team as indeed he had in previous years (in addition to many efforts with Port Perry Minor Softball). Our thoughts are with Beau, his mom Carolyn and his two sisters Aimee and Michelle in this tragic loss. John would have wanted the team to carry on despite the cloud over our team and our players competed in the Keene tournament as bravely as pos- sible without Beau. Our first game was against St. Johns from Peterborqugh and game MVP Mau Skerratt led the way with a rat trick in our 6-0 victory. Trevor Weisflock notched two goals and Chris Medford chipped in the other. Matt Cracknell and Gerard Timmers each had three assists while Cory McQuade had two helpers. big Mike Milligan and Ryan Kehoe also dréw assists in suppdrt of Carey Clendert's shutout. Though they wergp't on the scoresheet, Joseph Farquharson, Sean Williams and Tim Jones all got an A for effort in their great defensive play. Game two tuned out to be against our league competitors Port Perry Printing and this was a real tough game with the outcome in doubt until a late insurance marker by Port Perry Printing to lock up their 4-2 victory on their way to winning the touna- ment championship. Despite a slow start, Re/max fought back from an early deficit to narrow the gap to 3-2 in the final peri- od. Re/max markers were by Gerard Timmers on a dazzling shorthanded breakaway effort as well as a power play goal by Mau Skerratt who had taken over Beau's position for the day. Once again, our defence played steadily as did Carey in goal as he carned game MVP honours for Re/max. Well done team! A fine effort under the circumstances. Good luck in your Ops tournament next week- end. Country Style Bantam A Hockey After falling behind 5-1 in their 8 point OMHA quarter-finals with Cobourg; the Port Perry Country Style Bantam A's used a sensational effort from goaltender Mike Pashley to get back in contention with a 4-2 win at home on Friday night. Tuesday, in Cobourg, Port put out a reasonable effort but wasn't very lucky and fell 5-2 to the host team. _ Daryl Bourgeois fired Port's first goal, a long shot from the blue line, to cut a Cobourg lead to 2-1. After the Cougars went up 4-1, Jay Tredway scored the second to give Port some third period life. Joe Broadworth threw a good check to take the Cobourg player off the puck, Sean Ellis picked up the loose puck and fed a nifty pass to Tredway, who roared in to beat the goaltender inside the post. Port couldn't get any closer and a late empty-netter made the final 5-2. Friday night at home was an entirely different story, as the Country Style boys came out of the gate strongly and continued throughout. Pashley was brilliant, stoning the usu- ally deadly Cobourg snipers on every opportunity. Tredway finally put Port on the board late in the first. After heavy pressure by Ellis and Broadworth, Tredway blasted one from the slot to make it 1-0. Ian Shrigley doubled the margin just 30 seconds later from a close in. lan Mc€ready lugged the puck on a nice rush, then combined with Jay King to set up Shrigley just outside the érease. Jeremy Geer made a super move at the line to elude the Cobourg defenseman, then put a perfect pass on Dave Bourgeois' stick just to the side of the net. Bourgeois one-timed the pass, firing at bullet high into the net. . Halfway through the third, Tredway gave Port a 4-0 lead when he and King combined to strip the puck at the blue line and Tredway went in alone to score while the teams were playing 4 on 4. Cobourg notched two power play markers late in the game to ake the score closer, but Pashley his team hung tough to pull Port back into the Hopefully the effect of the first win in 12 games against the Cobourg will give the team a mental boost for game 5 in Cobourg Tuesday night. Scugog Overhead Doors Pee Wee Hockey The Doormen Jus ended a best three out of five™series with Belleville. This match-up had fans on the edge of their seats. - All three games were exciting, fast paced hockey. Two games went into the fourth period overtime. The Doormen can be very proud of the way they played as a team. Kent Johnston and Paul Shrigley shared the goaltending and both came up with great saves. The strong defense consists of Matt Baxter, Trevor Smith, Colin Laird, Bobby Cracknell, Jason I crain | LA RIET REPORT Prices quoted at market closing Mon., Feb.17/92 Board Prices Hopkins and Robert Gracie. These six guys like to hit and do a great job defending their goalies. The fast flying forwards consist of Darryl Moase, Kristian Wooten, Dan Robinson, Justin Halligan, Shane Norton, Arron Levy, Brad Shanley, Kevin Gray and Jamie Strickert. Belleville won this series with three hard fought games. The Doormen did their best against a strong Belleville team. Great series, boys! , Special thanks to Tim Brooks, Jel Labanovich and Ralph McCullough for their work throughout the season. Ivory Forest Junior Ringette Thursday Feb. 13 the Ivory Forest Juniors travelled to Mississauga where they skated to an 8-3 win over the Mississauga Belles. Port Perry put the pressure on early in the game and continued to dominate the game throughout the two periods. Kim Poppleton fired in two of Port's goals and Dawn Doucette was responsible for two as well. Karen Kett slipped the ring passed the Mississauga goaltender three times and a single went to Jennifer Smith. Assists were awarded to Megan Marlowe (2), Jennifer Smith (2), Amy Parliament (2), Dawn Doucette (2), Kim Poppleton and Karen Kett. Some very determined checking by Leea Kinnunen and Michelle Fitzpatrick kept Mississauga's goal total down to three. These girls were ably assisted by Julie Ball who stepped in for an injured Jennifer Morden. IGA Junior Ringette The Port Perry IGA Juniors are into the playoffs now. Game three was held on Saturday evening versus Markham. At the initial blast of the referee's whistle, Julie Ball raced for the ring, secured it with Markham in het pur- suit. Julie made a pass over to Deanna Dempsey who netted our first goal within one migute into the first half. Less than two minutes later, Markham retaliated, making the score 1-1. Sarah Coyne played in net and stopped many of Markham's menac- ing shots. Amy Sinclair picked up the ring, challenging the opposition. A pass from Amy over to Julie Ball and the rest is history as our second goal was scored. Amy and Julie demon- strated what team work is all about. Markham came back with another goal. The score was 2-2 at the end of the first half. Vicki Stainton and Julie were the stars of the second half, with Vicki scoring twice, both assisted by Julie. Port won 4-2. Game four of the play- offs is this Sunday at the Don Beare arena. Good luck girls! Pineridge Sports Atom B Hockey The Pineridge Sports Atom B team 'travelled to Napanee on Saturday for their second game in this series with Napanee. With a pre- vious win tucked safely in their pock- ets, Port went on the ice with a lot of confidence. Port went down R.R. 1, Bethany, 10 a 7-3 defeat. Hwy. 7A & 35 On Sunday, Port hosted Napanee for the third in this series. With a tie at one apiece this was an important go-ahead game. Port started this game on sofe- what of a flat note as they allowed Napanee to set the pace. With a lack of fire on ice it was only a matter of time before Napanee scored. With only 17 seconds left in the first peri- od they did just that. Second period saw- a spark on the team and the Pineridge boys came back to make this a challenging game. Port closed at the second period with a 1-1 tie when Adam Hobbs beat Napanee 10 a loose puck and caught the goalie out of position. Nice shot Adam! Earning the assists were Ian Parliament and $cott Sanderson. Port was really fired up in the third period and gave a great effort as did Napanee, but it was Napanee who put the puck between the pipes to win a very close game. Dave Gainey and lineman Monsma and Pelyk had great scoring opportunities only to be robbed by stubborn goal posts. Chris Jones and his linemates McQuade and Bruton were instrumental in moving the puck up the ice, causing a stir in front of the net, but unable to score. Keep up the pressure, boys! Defensemen Chambers, Moynes, McCready and Brain are doing a great job along the blue line. travels to Napanee on Sat to continue this series. Good ort! Allen's Siding Products Tweens Ringette Allen's Siding Products Tweens played this first game in the Mariposa Tournament on Wednesday the 12th against Whitby. From start to finish it was noticeable that a 9 p-m. game was definitely too late for our team. Although the score was mostly kept within a one goal spread Port ended up on the losing end by just one goal 'again' 4-3. Brandy and Shona.scored unassisted and Dana scored on a great pass from Shona. The Allen Siding girls were abso- lutely superb 8 a.m. Saturday against their league competitor Pickering. Port came out flying and stayed high throughout the game. This team has defeated our girls all season but determination was written all over our girls. Melissa and Brandy were strong on defense barely allowing a shot on Katie. Bonni-Jo and Jenny played their usual hard checking game much to Katie's relief. Once again, Katie was consistently aggravating lo Pickering's shooters and only allowed one shot past her. Heather Tredway scored our only goal assist- ed by a perfect play involving Lynda and Shona. With two Port players in the penalty box for the last minute and a half of the game, Jeremy and Katie were put through what must have seemed like the 20 minute workout! Congratulations team on holding this Pickering squad to a 1-1 tie and we look forward to meeting them again in the play-offs soon. The third game was played against an unknown St. Clements 'C* team. They made Port work for every goal and once they were four goals ahead, our Red and Blue sticks switched. Bonni Jo scored her first goal of the season on a perfect deek, Jenny placed a nice one deep in the net and Brandy scored assisted by a quick thinking Melissa. Other single goals were shared by Dana, Laura and Shona. Three cheers for Heather's hat trick! Everyone was recorded as having at least one assist -- what a T-E-A-M effort in this 9-2 match. Unfortunately, due to a loss in the first game, Port did not end up in the championship; however, we do have: a ion goalie'. Katie particip ed in the tournament shoot-out and she defeated seven other goalies to capture the trophy. Congratulations Katie, we always knew you were the best. P.S. Ask Cara and Shona when they are joining the Ice Capades to perform their 'smash up derby' com- edy act.
