, February 18, 19927 ~~ du Spend a romantic Evening in Paris -- ld be more romantic than giving your loved one an 'Evening in Paris'? Just because you can't afford the trip doesn't mean you have to give up on' romance, because the Community Memorial Hospital dation is presenting 'Evening in Paris' right here in Scugog. Okay, so Scugog doesn't have an Eiffel Tower. So what! You can enjoy a faux Eiffel Tower, stroll through the gardens of Versailles on the arm of the one you love. Have him (or her) shower you with gifts from the luxu- at Maximes. Have a caricature done on the Left Bank, and then dine at the Moulin Rouge where the cuisine, entertainment and dancing is first class all the way. All this, and it's all happening at the Blackstock Rec Centre! The planning committee has been work- ing on the hospital's gala fundraising event since last fall, and their work -- plus the generosity of so many local supporters -- is sure to make Saturday February 29 a night to remember. According to committee chair- man Debbie McGarry it's the third 4 rious b of the Ch time the hospital has pted a Elysees, and hen spa drink ggcter gala, and it's also the most lavish, Proceeds from the gala will go to the foundation's building fund, which. has only $100,000 left to raise of the $2.7 million necessary for the planned expansion. Debbie says a target has been set for $20,000, but she admits, "I'd love to exceed that!" Because economic times have been tough, the committee has been downright ingenious in coming up with fresh but inexpensive prizes and decorations. "We've really had 10 be creative and innovative with our plans to make it a really fun evening," she says. For example, the 'crackers' are made from 120 toilet paper rolls hose pital staff brought in. The centrepieces are top hats, filled with wine, wine glasses, gourmet foods and tickets for events like Jays, Leafs or Argo games, and local theatre (Port Perry, Oshawa, Lindsay, Whitby). Instead of going to just a few businesses and individ- uals for donations, the com mittee has gone to many people -- so the costs will be less for each per- son. "By everybody contributing a lit- tle, we've put together some really fabulous packages," Debbie says. The evening begins at 6 p.m. with cockuails and a tour through the beautifully decorated hall, where all the major tourist attractions of Paris will be duplicated. A gourmet meal at 7 p.m. leads into dancing by high- pried, high-kicking can-can girls, followed by 'Let's Make A Deal!', featuring Master of Ceremonies Paul Arculus and a host of exciting sur- prises -- almost like you see on tele- vision, except, "We ask people for money for the opportunity to get involved," Debbie explains. As for what is going to be given away in the Parisian game show, Debbie will only talk in generalities because she wants most of it to be a "Since 1982, we have quietly built a business on the basis of integrity, guality workmanship, and high standards of customer service. Overnight accom- modations have been booked for the two of you on the third floor (where proprietor Niki Bainbridge was locked in by the ghostly apparitions). There are so many more silent auction packages, 100 many to men- tion in one story! And they're all imaginatively different! As Debbie says, "You can't go out and buy i it. They're unique experiences, creating special memories." Entertainment-wise, guests at the gala will enjoy the can-can girls (choreographed by Pat Smith), mime artists, illusionist Peter Loughran and a MYSTERY GUEST appear- ance. Another mystery! One thing that's no mystery is the ticket price -- $100 per person. Only 130 tickets were available and Debbie says half are already sold. 'The remaining half can be purchased at Community Memorial Hospital (985-7321), Nuts About Chocolate (985-0761), and Pine Ridge Packers (985-4932). All proceeds will go to the Community Memorial Hospital Building Fund. Dress is semi-formal, but if the Paris mood moves you, go for it! Until February 29, au revoir!
