by John B. McClelland The Port Perry MoJacks and Little Britain Merchants are tied at one game each in their best of seven series for the Central Ontario Junior C League champi- Merchants took game one in Port Perry Sunday night 7-4, but the MoJacks rebounded in solid fashion 24 hours later in Little Britain for an 8-3 win. Mike Coulson led the MoJacks Monday night with three goals and an assist. John Lally had big night as well with a pair of markers and three assists. Other goal scorers for the MoJacks were Clair Cornish, Pete Young and Scott Erickson. For the Merchants, Mark Taylor, Jeff Budden and Jeff Adams did the scoring. Ian Cooper blocked 36 shots in the MaJack net, while Brad Proulx faced 30 at the other end of the ice. Molacks led 3-1 after the first, 6-3 after 40 minutes and added two more in the final frame. Monday night's game was much rougher than the series open- er Sunday with almost 100 minutes in penalties. In the series opener Sunday night in Port Perry, the Merchants used the second period to unleash a four goal outburst on their way to a 7-4 victory over the MoJacks. And the guy who did most of the damage in the second was Steve Trumbull who scored a natu- ral hat trick that erased a 3-1 MoJack lead. And Trumbull's three goals came in a span of under five minutes. CITIZE MoJacks, Merchants tied The MoJacks actually got off to a fairly good start considering the layoff of more than two weeks. They drew first blood at 8:44 of the first as Jeff Barr fed a nice pass to Jarrett Harman who flipped a back-hand into the top corner. MoJacks got sloppy with the puck at their own line and Jody Keenan walked in alone to beat Marc Dekker and even the game at 1-1. Late in the period, Scott Erickson gave MoJacks a 2-1 lead off a pass from John Lally with Kevin Bagshaw getting the other assist. And just 30 seconds in the mid- dle frame Clair Cornish put one through the pads of Brad Proulx from a sharp angle to make it 3-1 with Brad Menzies getting the assist. But then Trumbull went to work with his first goal at 7:11 from the left side on a delayed penalty, his second at 10:01 to tie the score as the MoJacks were caught running around in their own zone; and the third at 12:01 into a wide open net as Dekker was well out of the cage trying to smother a loose puck. The final Merchant goal in the second period came from Stéve Roberts on the power play as he snapped a wrist shot from the face- off circle. Merchants out-shot the MolJacks 19-4 in this period and that pretty well told the tale. The MoJacks made it close early in the third as Mark McKay one-timed a shot a pass from behind the cage with Mike Coulson and Peter Young getting the assists. The Merchants put the game away for good at 15:09 as Steve Black was sent in alone by T om Devine and he made no mistake with a shot to the corner. Mark Taylor added an empty netter wit seven seconds left to finish the scoring. v+ SLAPSHOTS: The Merchants were hot coming into this final series as they took Bowmanville out in six games. They won the last two by scores of 5-2 and 10- 2. "As for the Merchants and MolJacks, there wasn't much to choose between the clubs when they hooked up in the regular. schedule. Both won four games with the Central Junior C League convenor Andy McLachlan was on hand Sunday night to present the Smith Family trophy to MoJack h netminders Marc Dekker (left) and lan Merchants getting 40 goals and the MoJacks 37. MoJack head coach Ken Harman said after Sunday night's loss he expects his team will get stronger as the series goes on. And he didn't think the layoff had a negative impact on the team. "It's no excuse. We took the bye and we have to live with it. But one game doesn't make a series," he said. But he was less than pleased with the fact MoJacks took ten Cooper, who sported the best goals against average this season at 4.50. This is just the second time that MoJack netminders have won this award. minors and the Merchants just four. "We have to stay out of that box." MoJack captain Brad Menzies missed game two after suffering an injury in the opener. He's expected back in action this weekend. .
