Millar Lights shine in 'The King and I The Millar Lights will return to the Town Hall stage this spring with their production of the Rodgers and Hammerstein famous Broadway musical "The King and 1." From the earli- est silent westerns, through to 1990' s Dances With Wolves, i have been f: with the mythology of the American west. Be it the taming of the frontier, the life of the out- laws, or portrayals of whites ver- sus the Indians, the west- son, nicely portrayed by Montgomery Clift. There's a real- ly poor ending to this powerhouse film, but it in no way diminishes the film's overall impact. A real stunning piece of work, sprawling, lusty and remarkably directed, Red River was one of the best films of its year. Shane (1953) Quite simply a movie master- ern film has dominated the movie art since the first one, The Great Train, john h. foote Robbery (1903) flickered 9 across screens in Nickelodeon theatres - at the flicks More so than any other genre, the western has been loved by audi- ences everywhere. Once again, video offers audi- ences the chance to watch the great western films, reliving the chases, the powerful portrayals and tender moments that estab- lished values in the '30s through the '60s. This week, I have select- ed what I consider to be the great- est westerns ever made, all avail- able on video. Bear in mind many of these films can be bought for as low as $20! Red River (1948) Director Howard Hawks twist- ed the famous Mutiny on the Bounty story, re-setting the plot on a cattle drive in which the men rebel against their tough boss. John Wayne was superb as the brutal, hard driving cattle baron who is betrayed by his adopted ONE FREE SESSION to Newcomers piece that seems to get better] with each viewing. It's a very! simple story that explores the rela- tionships between a gunfighter who comes to the aid of some homesteaders who are being forced out of their homes. Yet Shane dares to probe deeper, touching upon the devoted hero worship between a young boy and the gunslinger. Alan Ladd, Jean Arthur, Van Heflin, and young Brandon de Wilde are magnificent in director George Stevens' finest film. De Wilde's cries for Shane to come back will haunt movie goers in generations to come. The Searchers (1956) The greatest western ever made, actually required viewing on hundreds of film school cam- puses across North America. Director John Ford tells the story of a man, Ethan Edwards, search- Shia Cadden a---- ing for his niece who was carried off by Indians during a murder raid. Anyone, I mean ANYONE who has ever doubted John Wayne's talents as an actor should take in this film, if only to see his towering performance as the cruel, racist Ethan, a man tormented by his own convictions. The perfor- mance dom- movie itself was the finest of 1956, yet as with most great works, ignored at the time. A mas- terpiece of American film, widely considered one of the finest films of all time. True Grit (1969) An original western that DID win John Wayne his Oscar for best actor for his performance as tough old Rooster Cogburn, a law- man helping a young girl find her father's killer. Cogburn is a classic Wayne character, a one eyed, whiskey swilling old coot who simply does not know the mean- ing of the word fear. There's a great scene when, outnumbered four to one, he takes the reins in his teeth and charges headlong at the outlaws.
