SI To the Editor: These comments are a result of your coverage of the Scugog bud- get meeting in the March 31 issue of the Citizen. (Tax Bite and Tempers Flare) My concerns are about the ease with which sensi- tive attitudes arose from 'ur politicians being questioned on spending and the budget process. With the exception of council lor David Dietlein, I got the impression council members are were quite self-indulgent at their enormous success in in zipping up the purse strings with onluy ald? per cent (local tax) increase. | agree this is an absolute improve- men{, over prior years and reservedly commend them for their efforts. It does seem to raise the question whether negative growth budgets are against some kind of law. A 1 want to congratulate council lor Dietlein, not only for standing by his campaign platform, but also for the int one cally noted that none of his motions for further cuts was sec- onded by more senior members of the council. His focus was for zero budget growth and limiting councillors expenses for confer- ences. It was also my personal inter- pretation that Colin Kemp, a pub- lic observer with political aspira- tions was treated with some dis- dain on his efforts to carry the budget cutting process steps fur- erly. we should expect that Mayor Howard Hall would be responsible to pay for his wife's birthday tab. Marilyn Pearce might be advised that the Taxpayers Coalition may well be a cause her voters might think worthy of the privilege of photo copies or occasional office staff time. Councillor Yvonne Christie seems not be prepared for the sac- rifice of public life when she so step further. It should be specifi- po having her speech taped. And councillor Ken . It is the ease with which this sensitivity surfaced that is trou- bling to me. Could this mean that Mr. Kemp has not yet asked all the right questions? Why then did our local politicians anger so easily? yor Hall and the rest of il should not be concerned with attempts to embarrass them. I am in favour of any strategy that can generate this type of per- sonal sensitivity as a means of political accountability. Please keep all your personal cheques. Embarrassment will only occur from dis-service to the ratepay- ers. - I am personally not acquaint- ed with any of these people, nor am I politically motivated as per- haps Mr. Kemp appears to be. I do, however, thank and encour- age him to continue his diligence that my tax dollars are spent wisely and reduced if possible. I would also recommend that the rest of the council consider sec- onding some of councillor Dietlein's sensible motions. Start to recognize a member who seems to be doing his best to rep~ resent the electorate. My taxes may actually decline with the next budget session. Bill Bradburn, RR 1, Nestleton, Ont. Ski resort expansion To the Editor: I feel it is worth drawing the public's attention to a particular application for re-zoning in Durham Region, which, if approved, could have a signifi- cant impact on wildlife and the future of the Oak Ridges moraine. Lakeridge Ski Resort on Durham Road 23 has plans to add three more ski runs to the present operations. For those who enjoy downhill skiing, the proposal may seem like a good idea. However, this expansion would wipe out most gfthe trees on a 20 acre par- cel of land--trees that belong to a mature and vital forest, the likes of which are sadly becoming a rare sight in our lifetime and can never be replaced by man. This "climax forest" is the home to hemlock, sugar maple, American beech, and is the source of Nonquon and Ganaraska Rivers, Duffins Creek, and the Lake Simcoe area watershed. Wildlife dependent on this for- est would be displaced. Furthermore, local residents have found their well water levels dropping since the artificial snow making began. Increasing the number of ski runs would add to that problem. I am appealing to anyone who respects and values the endan- gered environment to write a let- ter to the Planning Committee at the Municipal Offices of the Uxbridge Township council this week. The timing is crucial. There is a chance that if enough letters are received, the proposal could be denied. Please make your voice heard, Brenda Stevenson, Seagrave.
