Now, I understand why E.L. Doctorow's sprawling novel Billy Bathgate was one of the finest novels | have ever read. A colorful, wonderfully entertain- ing book that details a young boy's fascination and subsequent ly). employment with Gangster Dutch Schultz, the novel was thrilling from beginning to end; I consumed it in three days. When | heard Touchstone Studios purchased the book for a film, I was thrilled. Then, quite unexpectedly, terrible timing began to happen to Billy Bathgate's movie life. Robert Benton was hired to direct, an unknown was cast as Bathgate, and in the move they may have thought Robert Benton could direct this; he won an Oscar for directing Kramer vs. Kramer, (but honest] an average film to great heights by virtue of his per- formance. He was brilliant in his Oscar winning roles in Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), and Rain Man (1988), as well as giving remark- able performances in The Graduate (1967), Midnight Cowboy (1969), Lenny (1974), Straight Time (1978), and Tootsie (1982). Yet when Hoffman fails, he does so completely and utterly. I feel he failed in Death of a Salesman (1984), but his failure in, Billy Bathgate is so complete] it is pathetic to watch. The Dutch Schultz of Doctorow's book was a frightening psychopath capable of murder without the slightest twinge of con- science. Not once did I ever feel Hoffman was this man, but rather an actor struggling with a role he is Every month, the Port Perry Legion, B h and Father, son, and little Heather 419, draws a 50/50 winner. Nope!). t's sad to see an actor of his stature sluggish, and heading to a pre- (yes, Bruce Willis) is terrific in a small role as a dandy hood who meets an untimely, terrifying end. Despite being a small role, Willis dominates every scene he's in. There's also a brilliant little perfor- mance from veteran actor Steve Hill as Scultz's bookkeeper, who quietly steals every scene he's in. And, finally, what of Billy Bathgate? Young Loren Dean is not required to do much, except a cou- ple of hot scenes with Nicole Kidman (Mrs. Tom Cruise). All in all, Billy Bathgate is dictable, dull lusion, Billy hand: film, but a huge, major Bathgate was perhaps the most dis- failure.
