It appears that Gary Edgar, Economic Development Officer for the Mississauga Band, is using the so-called 1923 Williams Treaty to back his claim for more land and waterfront footage on Scugog Island, all at Canadian tax-payers expense. : The original nomadic band established the reserve in 1843, 800 acres in all, by purchase from landowners of sufficient acreage - to satisfy their needs, Their pur- chase did not include -lake frontage, nor did there seem to be a desire for it. If they, in their wis- dom, had needed it, they would have bought it, likely with funds from the government of the day. With all due respect to Mr. Edgar, it is my belief that he is mixing apples and oranges. To say that this Band has suf- fered through 125 years of adver- sity is not true. They pay no land taxes, they pay no school taxes, they are exempt from provincial sales tax, most homes have been built with Clarification on Island land claims federal funds, and most have worked off the Reservation. Several years ago there were only a handful living on the Reservation. Heavily subsidized housing has brought some back in the past year. The 400 plus acres desired by the Band at the North end of Scugog Island are owned by the Ontario government and pur- chased from farmer/owners a number of years ago. Meant origi- nally to be a provincial park, it is now an access to the lake for all- citizens who wish to use the boat launching ramp. It is also a wildlife sanctuary and tree nurs- 'ery, and in my view is not avail- able for any other purpose. Other Indian bands may have somg realistic claims in other, of€ remote areas of Canada, where they have chosen to live, but not this Band. It is my opinion that the Mississaugas of Scugog Island have been well served in the past, have worked or lived off the Resesvation as they so desired, have not been subject to poverty, and are landowners which their forefathers wished them to be. In closing, I was heavily instru: mental in our Canadian natives getting their own federal ministry in 1966. Before that, all Indian business was handled by an assis- prea JON ¢.Wslon) DOOR LIVE Friday, July 10th at 4:00 PM FESTIVAL TENT (Lakefront) Tickets $5.00 Each Tickets avaliable at the Fi Country Style IG cnt Sponsors nut and 'never p tant deputy minister in the Immigration Dept. This was one result of my 1965 federal election campaign in East against (then) Prime Minister Lester Pearson. This debate may continue. Perhaps Mr. Edgar, or Band Chief Yvonne Edgar can give us con- crete examples of where they have been hard done by on Scugog Island. Many of us thank G for bringing this situation into public view. Many of us also dis- agree with the views expressed by him Perhaps a public discussion would help clear the air. Joel Aldred, DFC Scugog Island. Appalled To the editor: I was appalled by the photo in the Citizen last week showing the vandalism to head-stones in Pine Grove Cemetery, and by the letter by Patricia M, Boyd. Yes, there is more to be said on this issue, maybe not by Boyd. But I have a few words to say. In the 16 years while I was growing up in Prince Albert, I have seen and joined in a few of those "appalling" baseball games you were so disgusted with, May | remind you that is an open field where. there are few grave sites. Lisa M, Canning Aurora, Ont, Scugog is open for development To the editor! The Ontario government through the Interim Waste Authority, has declared about 33 por cont of Scugog (or 66 por cent of the GTA) to fe in an urban shadow for a landfill site, "Urban shadow means in transi. tion from rural to urban, thus Scugog Is how wide 42s open for devel nt of all kinds Developers, here is Jou big chance, A senior level of govern: ment (the province) takes prece- dence over the Durham Reglon Local councils cannot any development in the urban shadow.
