Izumi brothers win it all at GM Pro Bass Derby There's nothing quite like a cheque for $8,000 to knock the sleep from Bob Izumi's eyes. Bob and his brother Wayne were the easy winners in the two- day GM Pro Bass tournament held on Lake Scugog over the week- end. The well-known fishing broth- ers from Burlington took 41.10 pounds of bass from the lake in two days (live release) and that was about seven pounds more than the runners-up, another team of brothers-Peter and Mike Hartmann who took home $4,000 for their 33.90 pounds of fish. The Cannington team of Paul Marshman and Gerhard Mansholt (sponsored by Willy and Son Small Engines) pulled 29.75 pounds of fish from Scugog and pocketed $3,000 for their efforts. Bob Izumi was all smiles after Sunday's final weigh-in, though he told the Citizen he was feeling "very tired" going into the tourna- . ment. He had just returned from northern Manitoba where he had been shooting a lot of video for his well known television show about fishing. "We covered a lot of water" (in the Scugog tournament) fishing this lake, Pigeon Lake and in the Scugog River. Over the two days, Bob and Wayne brought in the limit of 12 fish and found they had the best results fishing cover areas close to spawn beds. And they tossed lures at stumps, logs, rocks and docks as well. He said jigs, buzz-baits and moss-boss silver spoons were the top producers this weekend. "While delighted with the first place finish, Bob said he had one disappointing moment on Sunday when he missed a lunker that was "better than six pounds." "I just made a mechanical error, that's all," he shrugged. Had he boated that one, it would have been the "big fish" in the touna- ment and put a few more dollars in his pocket. The big bass was entered by John Vandiever and Dan Fontana. It tipped the scales at 5.65 pounds. The Izumi Brothers usually do alot of fishing witha video cam- era pointed in their direction to collect footage for their popular television show. But not this weekend. Bob quipped that without the camera around "I get a chance 0 relax and swear at my brother." There were 80 boats entered in this tournament and there were big crowds at the Port Perry water- front for the weigh-in both days. And there were plenty of healthy looking bass in the three- pound range on display at the weigh-ins. For example, the 12 fish entered by the Izumi Brothers over the two days weighed an average of 3.4 pounds each. The tournament was sponsored by General Motors and both Port Perry GM dealers--Philip Pontiac Buick and Anderson Chev Olds-- had vehicles on display at the weigh-in centre. Good kicks in Mite soccer Tuesday, June 23 was a night for draws in mini soccer. Subby's Submarine and Framer's Gallery battled it out in an exciting game for a 1-1 final. The Cunningham brothers kept the pressure on offensively for Subby's, with Tyler scoring their goal and Blake making some good kicks. Robert Mark played a good defensive game, but Todd Lance was able to break through to score one for the Framer's Gallery. Matthew Roth played well in net for the Gallery, and Sean Murray provided good defensive back-up. Outstanding athletes Chris MacDonald and Natasha Vanderwyst were named out- atk in tion ceremonies held last week. School's gradus- Nuts About Chocolate and Technique Drywall hdd a see-saw high scoring game, with Nuts coming from behind to tie Technique Drywall 4-4 in the closing minutes. Tim Cruickshank and Matthew Whalen scored for Nuts, and the Gibson brothers, Duncan and MacKenzie, both played determined solid mid-field rolls. Technique Drywall always looked dangerous, breaking through the defense, with Nelson Langmaid and Leo Taillon scor- ing their goals. On June 24 F.A. Slinger Transport was unable to contain Scugog Lumber, who ran away with the game 8-1. F.A. Slinger had reason to celebrate though, as they got their first goal of the sea- son when Kyle Steele showed his prowess by kicking it between the pipes. Crystal Humphrey and Emily Davis played outstanding ball, showing greatly improved play. Charron scored an amazing 5 goals for Scugog Lumber, and Kelly Lukas got a hat trick. Matthew Hertzberg assisted on one goal and had many near misses . Alyson Rudkin and Kyle Bowers helped out with some fantdstic defensive moves. Re/Max Realty suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of the Manvers 2 team, in a close game that ended 2-1. Adam Smart got the realtor's goal. Caylie Gilmore and Taylor Ramsey put in a solid effort, and Kyle Geer really got into gear and showed a lot of spirit. Fowler, Davies picked up their first win of the season, defeating Manvers 1 in a 1-0 game. Jim Lacey of Peterborough shows off a couple of nice fish that tipped the scales at about four pounds each. Paul Marshman of Cannington with two rw that helped he and partner Gerhard Mansholt to third place overall in the GM Pro Bass Derby.
