wp 31- Bougog Cliizen -- Tuesday, June 30, 1093 Legionaire Squirts On June 28, Port Perry's rep team in the York-Durham League were on the road to play in Bramalea. This was a tough battle in the hot sun and the host team took advantage of their opportuni- ties to take a 3-2 win. Our Legionaires took a 1-0 sec- ond inning lead but weren't able to give the knockout punch as we had bases loaded with none out but couldn't push any more runs across the plate. We went ahead 2- 0 in the third when Chris Jones slugged a solo homer. Bramalea battled back by taking a run on a lead-off walk and a passed ball. They took the lead in the fourth inning when the lead-off hitter scored a single and a 3 base error quickly followed by another passed ball score. A couple of "soft" defensive plays on the Legionaire's part were inter- spersed among some solid defen- sive plays such as Brad's catch on a sinking liner in right field. Some poor sliding efforts on steal real nail-biter attempts had an impact during the contest as did some "called" third strikes on our part. Chris Jones was collared with the loss on 4 hits, $ strikeouts and 6 walks. Ryan Kroeker and 11 strikeouts to take the win for Bramalea. Casey Van Schagen was 3 for 4 for Port while Chris was 2 for 3. Other hits were by Ryan McQuade, Scott Jeffrey, Ryan Moynes, and Michael Versage. Free passes to first were camed by Brad (2), Michael and Ryan Fraser. Steady outfield catches were made by Reid McTaggart in left and Darryl Dalton in centre. Jon Froats handled his first base opportunities adroitly. A special commendation to Scott Jeffrey's gutsy effort in filling in at the demanding catching position today. Next home game for the Port Perry Squirts will be July 2nd, at 6:30 p.m. at the Water St. South Diamond. See you there! Squirts bring home The Port Perry Mixed Squirt Soccer team participated in the Uxbridge tournament this past Saturday, June 27th, putting forth a superb performance as they came home with a second place finish. Their first game was a nail biter for the first half, as both Uxbridge and Port had gotten a goal. Scoring for Port Perry was Kevin Robins, on a great pass in the air from Nick Byers. Port proved their ability in the second half, as Clayton Gilmore chalked up another one, followed by Kevin's second of the game. Uxbridge was unable to get past our goalie, Andy Drebit, again, so the game ended with a score of 3- 1 for Port Perry. Port was then put against an all girl's team from Bradford, who put on a good show against out team. Once again Kevin Robins pushed the ball past the goalie from a great pass from Wes Langmaid. Wes later took the honor by scoring in the final minutes of the game to push Port Perry ahead 2-1. Great defensive work from Jenna Phoenix who played her best game of the season so far. The final game against a tough and rough Tyrone team, unde- feated in their entire season, was discouraging as Port lost 10-0, but we played our best and still managed to hold onto second place. Katie Beirness showed her determination as she refused to give up on defence when the Tyrone forwards were becoming quite rough. Derek Fishley played to the best of tis ability as he helped out both offensively and defen- sively. The strong Tyrone for- ward line kept Jamie Corneal busy on defence also as he tried ENJOY a "KOUNTRY* LUNCH from Kountry Bulk & Delicatessen Se WATER ST., PORT PERRY 985-3007 "Al Natural SALADS Fresh Fruits, Coleslaw, Carrot, Macaroni, Potato. MoJacks name assistants The Port Perry MoJacks have appointed two assistant coaches to work with head coach Brad Ryder for the up-coming Junior C hock- ey season. And they are two names familiar to Junior C hockey fans in Port Perry. Brad Menzies and Len Giacalone each spent several years in uniform with the green and white. Menzies finished his playing days this spring as one of two "over-agers." The Port Perry native captained the squad, was co-MVP and during his five years with the club, was a superb play- maker, penalty killer and face-off specialist. Giacalone spent four with the MoJacks as a player and was a member of the team that went to the all-Ontario finals in 1987-88. He was a tough, hard- nosed player who enjoyed the rough going and didn't mind dropping the gloves when neces- sary Last season, he worked with Ryder behind the bench with the Oshawa AA Midgets. Ryder, 30, was appointed head coach two weeks ago, taking over the reins from Ken Harman who spent the better part of four years behind the bench before stepping down this spring to spend more time with his young family} Hints on how to book a charter Many people want to fishing charter but are unslre about how to go about it or what questions to ask. Locating a char- ter boat can be as simple as check- ing with a friend or fellow worker. Now if you can't get mation you need or the trip was a negative experience, you will need to look elsewhere. Try the local newspapers -- there are often advertisements for charter boats Now you have a place to start. My suggestion would be to scrutinize the ads before you start operation : of the Ontario Charter Boat All M with the O.C.B.A. are of a mini- HOMEOWNERS DO YOU QUALIFY FOR SS000O0. You now have shortened your fftry to pass on iisome questions FAMlyour success and fun while on the water, These are not in any particular order. Ask if the operation is full time. My experience in the busi- ness tells me that if the operation is seven days a week and that the carnings from the boat put the food on the table and pay the bills, you will always get a quality effort. Part time operators quite often aren't in touch with the fish- ing on a daily basis, therefore your charter may be a bit of a crap shoot. The full time operator is usually on the water on a daily Check on the minimum size that your party can be. Most advertise between four 10 10. In junction with the mi party 4ize, ask the size of the boat you will be fishing on. Your own "common sense would suggest that a minimum party of six on a 22- foot boat just won't be comfort: able. Ask about the price per person as this might be relative to your budget. But more importantly I feel that if you get a price of less Please see CHARTER, page 25
