wp 14 Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, July 7, 1992 Dump sites stir emotional response FROM PAGE 1 Only about 50 people turned out to the meeting (most of them already directly involved in the dump site issue in Ward 1) "We too are disappointed at the turn-out," said Ward 1 councillor Ken Carruthers, who is also co- chairman of the PEST committee. "But don't blame the commit- tee if thére are only a few people at this meeting," said an angry Mr. Carruthers at one point. The outburst of anger is an indication of the depth of feeling that has built since the IWA dump sites announcement last month. PEST, chaired by Mr. Carruthers and Dave Sparling, is working on technical briefs against the Highway 12 sites, - while in Ward 4 (Cartwright) the Zero Garbage group is working on opposition to two announced sites on Highway 7A about a mile west of Blackstock. Zero Garbage is holding a pub- lic meeting in the Blackstock Rec Centre this Thursday evening. At Sunday's meeting, Mr. Carruthers defended PEST's course of action to present techni- cal briefs to the IWA on why the Highway 12 sites are not a¢cept- able for landfill. And several in the audience commended PEST for the course of action it has decided to follow on this issue. At one point Mr. Carruthers said "political action" (protest marches on the Legislature, etc.) would be a waste of energy at this point in the selection process. Maureen Hall, who lives within the impact zone of site L7 (cast side of Highway 12) said she plans to take part in a mass anti- dump protest at Queens Park July 7, and is organizing a local protest this coming Friday from 4:00 to 6:00 PM (call 985-9682 for location if you want to take Roger Holtby, a member of the committee, whose family farm is one of the three sites along Highway 12, told the meeting the 20-year dump would see garbage piled 80 feet in the air. That's as high as the silos on the world famous Hanover Hills Farm, another of the sites. "There is no question they (the IWA) have picked some of the best farmland in Scugog, lands that are well farmed and part of family farms," he told the meet- ing. He noted the L2 and L3 sites | SHIELHEHE LIMITED 41 Queen Street, Port Perry OPEN +RIDAYS to 9:00 PM Men's SPORT SHIRTS Each 29.95 -OR - 2for 55.00 985-1965 Ladies' SWEATERS 30% OFF Antl-dump signs like these were on display dump sites Issue. Emotions ran high at times in Sunday evening In front of Town Hall 1873 as the the meeting with some people claiming there Is & PEST committee held a public meeting over the need for stronger 'political' action. See story. are only about a mile south of Manchester and the L7 site is about 1500 metres from Prince Albert Public School. . Several members of the audi- ence, including Harley Johnson, a former resident of Reach, said contamination of well and surface er is a real possibility from the. dfill, water that is part of the system that feeds the wells for Port Perry and Prince Albert. The meeting was told that a dump anywhere in Scugog would have a major negative impact on the Township's tourist industry. Both Zero Garbage and PEST will try to convince the IWA that tourism must be a criteria in the site selection process. Mr. Carruthers said after the meeting the Scugog Chamber of Commerce will come out with a statement officially opposing a Regional dump here. "The dump would be absolutely devastating on tourism in Scugog," he This coming July 13, Zero' Garbage and PEST will present oral briefs to the IWA and on July 17, the groups will be part of a workshop in Toronto where they will push the IWA to include tourism as one of the selection process criteria. The IWA identified 17 poten- tial sites in Durham Region for a 250 acre landfill that would take about 6.6 million tonnes of trash over its 20 year life. Up to 200 trucks each day could arrive at the site from all over the Region. The IW. ill narrow that list 10 four or five sites this September and announced onc "preferred site" carly next year. "Our (PEST committee's) job, is to make sure none of the sites get on that short list," said Mr. Sparling. Citizens of Blackstock & Cartwright Township DO YOU KNOW?
