Seugog Clitien -- Tuesday, July 31, 1993 = 18 CITIZEN SPORTS Gamblers furious over 'bush tactics The Greenbank Gamblers are furious over what some are calling "bush" tactics by the Peterborough Mens Senior League. Gamblers were informed by the league late last week that there will no playoff games held at Greenbank's lanson Park this year. Last year, the Gamblers, as a new team in the Peterborough League, had to accept a similar ruling and play all their post-sea- son matches in Peterborough. The Gamblers had expected to be able to play their home playoff games at lanson Park this sum- mer, and assumed the league would treat the club like a full partner. Last week's decision hit the Greenbank club like a bombshell and the reaction among players and management was very nega- tive. In fact, some players wanted to drop out of the league com- pletely now and skip the playoffs as they feel the team is just a "convenience" for the four-team Peterborough League which has no interest in trying to promote fastball in Greenbank. The players, coaches and man- agement had a meeting Monday night and decided reluctantly to play the rain-out game in Peterborough Tuesday evening and to take part in the playoffs But there is a lot of anger and dis- appointment among the team members. "It is ridiculous that we (Gamblers) don't have another home game at our park this sea- son," said manager Rod Foster. It should be pointed out here that in the long history of the Gamblers, the club has never for- feited a game and has never failed to show up for a game in another team's park. But the events of last week left the squad in a state of dis-belief. The playoff fiasco wasn't the only "bad news" the team experi- enced last week. Gamblers, who already had clinched first place, were supposed to hold the regular season finale at lanson Park last Thursday evening. The club had lined up some special draws to show apprecia- tion to their fans and to attract some new fans to the game. But the night before the game, their opponents, Winslow/Gerolamy Motors, informed the team they would not be showing up for Thursday's contest. W/G said the game meant nothing to the Gamblers, who had clinched first, and nothing to W/G who could finish ne higher than third, no matter what the-outcome. XL Eagles split a pair The Port Perry XL Eagles split a pair of games last week in the Oshawa City and District Fastball League action. Playing at home Thursday night against the Oshawa BB Juniors, Eagles looked like they would cruise to a victory, but the Juniors had other things on their minds. Eagles at one point in this one led 9-3, but the Juniors used extgd innings to take away an 11- 10 ry. But this one had to be called off due to bad weather, and it has been re-scheduled for tonight (July 21) in Peterborough. The events of last week have left a bitter taste among the Gambler players. Some said over the weekend that no matter what decision the team makes for the balance of this season with regards to the league playoffs, Gamblers next year will be playing some- where else. Meanwhile, the Gamblers are getting ready for the Senior Elimination tournament to be held in less than two weeks in Owen Sound, followed by the O.A.S.A. championships. For Harvey and Jennifer, it was their most successful show since they started showing their own ponies about two years ago. Driving Alderdale Sara, Harvey finished 3rd, 2nd and first in the Welsh Pleasure Driving and that gave him enough points for the Reserve Championship in that class. With: Jennifer showing Alderdale Sara, she took a 3rd in the Yeld Mare under a British judge, and 4th under the American judge. Jennifer finished first in ADS (American Driving Society) plea- sure driving, Junior Driver; first in reinsmanship and 2nd in Obstacle. This was enough to earn her the Junior Driver championship. With Harvey driving, he took first in the Limit Pleasure Driving and 3rd in obstacle. With Harvey and Shirley sharing the driving, Sara won a third in ADS double jeopardy cones. Shirley and Terry Cane contin- ue to enjoy a successful season. Kenview Kally-Ko with Shirley showing was first in the Yeld Mare under the British judge and 2nd under the American judge. She went on to win Senior Champion Welsh Section A Mare and Reserve Grand Champion Section A Mare under the British Judge. With Shirley driving, Kenview Kally-Ko was first in ADS Pleasure Driving and first in reins- manship. And she was named Reserve Champion Small Pony. Ardmore Audobon with Jennifer driving was 4th, 3rd, Sth and 2nd in Welsh Pleasure Pony US and with Shirley driving was 2nd in ADs Limit Pony, 2nd in Obstacle and 2nd in ADS Fault and Out. And with Jennifer driving/rid- ing, Ardmore Audobon was 4th in the Versatility class (driving, rid- ing, jumping) This was an excellent showing by the Scugog contingent who enjoyed the keen competition and American hospitality on their first venture to the States. They are already planning sev- eral cross-border trips in their 1993 show schedule.
