How to catch 'browns' The previous night's storm had turned the little streams, rapids and pools into a raging torrent. Water visibility was at about four inches. Perfect, | thought. River brown trout have become quite prolific in waters that once harboured brook trout. Browns are comfortable in water that is warmer than that preferred by brook trout. Development and land clearing have contributed to the warming of some of the best brook trout streams in southern Ontario making them more suitable for browns instead. Possibly the easiest way to catch brown trout is to wait for a good rain and head out the next day. The fact is that Quebec was supposed to have a referen- dum on sovereignty this October. This would answer the very important question: does Quebec want to be part of Canada or not. It is a simple question that demands a simple yes or no response. With the James Bay project on full steam and the backing of American industry, the answer to the question would have definitely been no. But wait a minute, New Yoik State i$ not promising funds to back this project. Without the financial backing, the separatists have changed their minds. Bourassa would like a vote now to see if Quebec will accept what Canada has to offer. I think this is dirty pool. - Canada should hold Quebec to what the original question was: do you want to be part of Canada or not? The loss of Quebec would not be the end of Canada. We as Canadians, should look at it as a new beginning; the beginning of a country free of language laws. I think we should demand a referendum from Quebec on sovereignty. No matter what the outcome of this vote, the rest of Canada should then hold & refer- endum on whether we want Quebec as part of Canada. If they can have a vote, or threaten to have a vote, we as Canadians deserve the same right. Believe me, the political will of Quebec is not for Canada; it is for Quebec and Quebec alone. Is that really what we want for the future of Canada, or do we want provinces that share a goal, a real dream of Canada that is dedi- cated and truly united. John Walley, Barrie, Ont. Lead-ins and tail-outs are obvious places but one of the best spots are adjacent 10 a back eddy. As food circulates around the éddy the brown will usually sit on the break of fast water and the eddy gives the brown a chance at different sources at the same time. ;1hold healthy popu- lations of river "browns. Remember, wait prised at your suc- cess. ps ints: For clear water browns, a very effective bait is an in-line spinner mepps vibrax and panther martin lead the way. As far as live bait, worms sull work but the most effective bait in the deep- er runs are minnows. Although dif- ficult to carry, a bait bucket around while climbing river banks it can pay big dividends. Lean to small chubs for the greatest success.
