The money raised through this demolition derby will be used for local community work such as expansion to the Community Hospital. Winners of the first heat of the evening were Tim Timms of Saintfield and Jeff Johnstone of In the second hear, Brian Goble was the last car running with dave Warren of Port Perry in second place. And in the final heat of the evening before the feature, Scott Seeney of Port Perry snagged first place followed by Paul Robinson of Prince Albert. There were 17 entries in this year's event and Tim Timms of Saintfield was judged as the "best dressed" car in the field. Cheques to the winners were presented by Lions Club president Gord Geer. There was lots of action (not to mention mud and Fair Board Saturday evening. About 1,000 people smoke) In the feature heat of the Port Perry Lions Club demo derby held In conjunction with the other. Taylor-Ford Mites earn a berth in OASA championship tourney The Port Perry Taylor-Ford Mites are on a roll and have won themselves a berth in the O.A S.A. championship tournament to be held at the end of the summer. The Mites earned the right to advance to the championship with a pair of convincing victories last week over Cobourg in a best of three elimination round. On Saturday, the team was in¢ Brian Goble, left, of Janetvilie won the demo derby. He received a $415 cheque from Port Perry Lions Club president Gord Geer (cen- tre). At right is Brian's crew chief Craig Hoskins of Blackstock. Cobourg for game one of this round and really switched into high gear afer two innings as the boys came home with a 23-3 vic- tory under their belts. Mark Richardson ftartéd the game on the mound for Port and idg fine job as he fanned seven of Wg 11 batters he faced. Braden Tarbotton came in for some mid- dle relief and struck out three of eight batters, as did Tim Jones who mopped in a closing role. As the score indicates, the Port Perry bats were alive in this one as Chris Monsma (triple) Aaron Lycett and Sean Jeffrey (doubles) all connected for three hits. Braden had a pair of hits while Tim and Mike had singles. The Hayes showed plenty of patience (and sharp cagle-eyes) at the plate as David Justynski col- lected four walks, Adam Moynes three, Tim two and Darren Miller fine defense with an alert tag-out at third base. Aaron ran down a high fly ball hit to left field and Tim was sharp/to hard liner back 10 the pitcher's' mound. Another real high-lite for the boys was a season-first relay from the outfield to get a Cobourg run- ner at third base. Adam retrieved a ball in right field, threw it to Chris at second Mike Lefort at third base for the tag-out. This was a near-perfect execu- tion of a play the boys have been working on in practise. And the team displayed more heads-up play in this game as they complet- ed two "delayed steals." On Sunday afternoon, the weatherman kept the rain away long enough to allow the Mites to host Cobourg at the south dia- mond. Port found the going a bit tougher in this one, but again the team put together a solid perfor- mance for the 9-1 victory that assured them a trip to the all- 0s. Braden was something of a sur- prise starter on the mound for Port Perry and he responded with a marvellous performance that included 17 strike-outs and just two hits surrendered to Cobourg batters. He gave up just four walks to round out an outstanding effort. Cobourg got its only run in the third inning on an error and then Braden pitched his way out of a bases-loaded jam. Mark Richardson led the Mites offensively with three hits includ- ing an imp tw double. turned out to watch 17 vehicles pound each lected two walks and Darren scored in the fourth inning after his walk. In York-Durham League action last week, the Mites found the out- come not quite so pleasant as they were defeated 10-3 by Willowdale. Port opened a 2-1 lead after the first two innings, but some timely hitting by Willowdale and some miscues in the field led to the vic- tory. Mark faced 31 batters in this one, and struck out a respectable 13. The big problem for the Mites was the lack of hitting (the bats were really snoozing) as only Braden and Mark could manage a hit. Mike LeFort had three walks, Tim and John Burnett two each, with Adam and Chris getting to first safely via the walk once. Mike Wiseman and John Burnett filled in capably in the absence of regtlars who are on vacation. The team will continue to work hard in practise over the next few weeks to strengthen all aspects of the game. The coaches, parents and fans of this Mite team extend gles came from Matt, Tim, Aaron, Chris, David and Adam. Mau col- on earning a berth in the all-Ontarios to be held in Springbrook.
