But George, a long-time and devoted fan of the famous singer/ song-writer, is on something of a mission, and his meeting with Taylor will fulfill a dream he's had for many years. Taylor will be giving a concert September 1 at Wonderland's Kingswood Theatre, when George meets him back-stage he'll present him with two hand-made, acoustic guitars. George has been building and repairing guitars professionally for the last 15 years or so and has always wanted to build one for his favourite artist. "I tried for months to contact him through his management in Los Angeles," George said in a recent interview. He didn't get to first base with letters and phone calls. But carly in April, he found out that Taylor was in Toronto promoting his lat- est album and staying at the Harbour Castle Hilton. immediately picked up the phone, called the hotel and asked if he could leave a message for Taylor. The switchboard operator put George's call directly through 0 Taylor's room and he could hardly believe his ears when the voice on the other end of the line said "this is James Taylor." "I thought his agent or publicist would answer the phone," recalls George with a smile. He told him he is a guitar maker and wanted 0 present him with two hand-made instruments "His response was very posi- tive," George said. While Taylor told him he'd be pleased to accept the guitars, he made it clear that if he didn't like them he'll get rid of them because he doesn't need extra guitars that he won't use. That stipulation was fine with George and he immediately set to work crafting the first of the two guitars. He completed the first one recently (the second one is partly finished) and what a beautiful instrument it is. A small "concen or parlour- size" guitar, the sides and back are fashioned from Indian rosewood, and the all-important front sound- board from Sitka spruce. It has herring bone binding, and a small abalone shell inlay shaped like a half-moon on the finger-board This is George's logo. The wood has been hand-pol- ished by George 10 a glistening finish, and even one who knows little or nothing about musical instruments can see the fine crafts- manship that gone into its making. George said he is pleased with this small guitar and enjoys pick- ing and strumming it so much he Please see GUITAR, page 22 1 8 brought © you by XL GAS BAR, Huy.
