Stuck, really stuck, FROM PAGE 1 They didn't know where they were, there was no moving the boat (they tried), and because of the almost limitless swamp sur- rounding them, there was no 'walking home". Fact is, they were stuck...but good. With no warm clothing or food, the three men settled in for a night in the marsh, building a fire for warmth, using logs from a nearby duck blind. Meanwhile, as the hours passed, their friends and rel- atives became increasingly wor- ried. Eventually they began a search, but foggy conditions forced the UNITED CARPET Largest Carpet Selection In Scugog Township and a member of the largest carpet buying group in Canada. Joining in the search was Scugog Island Marina owner Bill Kendry and Constables Brian Hall and Les Nagy on the Durham Region Police boat. From the water, there was vir- tually no indication of a boat hid- den behind the tall bulrushes, but in bulrushes! . On shore, the crew fought off horseflies and bees, while they sank ankle-deep through the bul- rushes and into the marshy water. In the boat, Bill struggled 10 keep the tow line away from the pro- peller. With each pull, the boat strained against its load, rocking the three, men were finally spotted, about 9 am., by Mr. Kendry. Bill knows about being lost -- more than a decade ago, he was lost in the woods of northern Ontario and came terrifyingly close to losing his life. But this trio was in no danger, other than being a little cold and damp. Nobody was injured when the boat ran aground. After spending a few hours resting and warming up, the men returned to the scene to begin the arduous task of retrieving the boat. They were joined by Bill and his daughter Patti Kendry, while the police cruiser circled nearby where the water was deeper. The plan was for Bill 0 pull the boat using his 50 Evinrude fishing boat and a tow line, while the peo- ple on shore wrestled the Thundercraft into position and ys and th g to throw its contents into the lake. With fierce determination, Bill kept his boat on course, making run after run, while the on shore crew matched every attempt with a mighty heave. Inch by inch, the stranded Thundercraft moved closer to the water. Excitement mounted when its nose appeared through the bulrushes, and then, with one final, back-wrenching effort, the Thundercraft was free of its marshy prison. Fortunately for the owner's willet, there was no damage to the bottom of the boat. But there could be an expensé when he goes 10 have a new name painted on the Thundercraft. Like the Biblical baby who was rescued from the bulrushes, the boat should be known, fron nere on in, as the S.S.
