Now playing at the Oshawa Centre Cinemas. 0 3 Advance reviews on this film were very favourable, in some cases, downright raves. 1 walked into this film with high expectations, due largely to the fact Clint Eastwood is a director of con- siderable talents. Rather than glorify the west, Eastwood is bold enough to Seate a dirty, muddy, rough world where human life means little. Except, however, to Munney, who is haunted by his past, guilt-ridden over the men he has killed, perhaps even full of self-loathing. Eastwood gives a fine perfor- mance as the broken down pig farmer, frantically trying to forget his vicious past, yet also wanting bounty money to give his children anew life. It is not your stereotypi- cal Eastwood role, but rather a debunking of his screen image, which manages to carry the film...well, sort of. Without a strong villain (and he must be evil because even the good guys here are nothing angelic), the movie would not work. Leave it to Gene Hackman to give an electrifying performance as the sadist, Daggett, a role so unlike anything Hackman has done, he will stun you. This is able actors; he makes you hate him within minutes of his first scene. However, problems: The film's major flaw is the incredibly slow pace, which at times brings the movie to an abrupt halt. Morgan Freeman is pretty much wasted in a small role as Eastwood's partner, and I found#®it hard to fathom EVERYONE, even the hookers, were so mean minded. While the climax of the films is just what you would expect, it takes far 100 long, with ponderous pauses, to happen. Eastwood is a strong enough direc- tor to fill these gaps, but he choos- es to allow them 10 try to be mean- ingful. Sadly, it simply does not work unless Gene Hackman is onscreen. I'm not sure [ have been quite as disappointed at the movies this year. Is the movie a failure? On some levels, not at all; the acting is superb, the cinematography beauti- ful, and at times, Eastwood's direc- tion is as sure as ever. Yet, with such a slow pace, and a plot that seems to go nowhere, how can we call the film a success? So, why are so many critics rav- ing about Unforgiven? It is my feeling that they are so starved for a great film, they are willing to cle- vate a $0-30 movie to greatness. While Unforgiven is original, harshly honest, and interesting, these qualities do not always con- stitute great art, nor a great film. Unforgiven is a good film, despite moments that drag on for- ever, despite being quite preten- tious. A classic, it is not. Watch your signs!
