EB Ol = Wades Selene EI 2 Coming up from September 27 through to October 4 Waste Reduction Week means the 3 R's Did you know that garbage does not break down in landfill sites as we once believed? As Arizona-based garbologist Bill Rathje like to put it, the trash we throw into the ground is simply "mummified." It's far from harmless there, however. A toxic liquid, known as Leachate, is created and leaks out, poisoning nearby groundwater supplies. Here's another fact you may not have known. Faithfully practicing the recycling habit will not just help to cut down on the garbage problem, but also led to much more efficient energy use. A TV set will run for three hours on the energy saved by recycling one aluminum can -- a pretty amazing statistic! Judging by the number of pop cans we all see on the roadside and in garbage cans at local parks, most folks don't know this. It's time we all clued in@ The ways we create and handle garbage are bad news, plain and simple. But Waste Reduction Week, sponsored by the Recycling Council of Ontario every fall, can help us learn to change our ways. If we begin to practic the "3Rs" more effectively, we can make less trash, then we won't need 80 many dumps in' future. The "3Rs" are Reduction, Reuse, and Recycling. You'll notice that Recycling is only number 3, and that means we need to practice the other two first. First, we try not to buy things which are disposable, create a lot of garbage, or are overpackaged. Then, we try to reuse whatever we can, either ourselves or by passing things to someone else who can. Or by repairing broken things rather than just trashing them. When we've done what we can with the first two "Rs", then we recycle what we can. In an ideal world, of course, we would make no garbage at all. Hard to conceive of, perhaps, but not a bad goal to aim for! Scugog Township will be having a series of events during this years Waste Reduction Week (coming up September 27-October 4) aimed at helping people learn some new habits. A local UCW group will be going on a "supermarket tour" to get a few pointers on how to take home less "garbage" from the grocery store, while on Tuesday ing (Septemb, 29th), there will be an informal information session about composting at Scugog Memorial library. On Wednesday or Thursday there will be a showing of videos about innovative waste reduction programs, and a used clothing drop-off is also being planned. Our local BIA (Business Improvement Association) ,and Chamber of Commerce have a plan for taking part in the weeks activities -- but how about your business or community group? We need to get everyone involved! Anyone who would like to take part in the best-ever Waste Reduction Week is invited to join in on a planning meeting on Wednesday, September 9th at 7:00 p.m. in the Scugog Council Chambers. Your help is needed! Feel free to call WRW Coordinator Janet Banting at 985-3225 to ask questions, make suggestions or request a list of possible waste reduction projects for your family, office, or community group. Every single person in Scugog Township out to plan on taking part in a Waste Reduction Week project. After all -- we all have a hand in making the garbage, don't we? FALL.
