Police believe some of the break-ins are related and a spokesman said late night patrols in industrial areas will be stepped up. More than $12,000 worth in construction tools disappeared the night of September 13 when an overhead door at Borson Construction was smashed. Damage to the door was $1500. A break-in the same night at Scugog Automotive Industries, also on Taylor Blvd., off Durham Road 8, resulted in the loss of nearly $10,000 worth of automotive tools. Police believe a vehicle was used to smash open the front door. And also that evening, the locks on 35 industrial storage units in the same area of the Township were removed with bolt cutters. Police are waiting for the owners to complete an inventory of what might be missing. On September 18, First General services in the Reach Industrial Park reported a large amount of tools and equipment missing after a pad-lock was removed. On September 16, Police say tools and line repair equipment was missing from the Bell Telephone compound on Durham Road 8. There were also break-ins at residences in Scugog over the last week or so. A TV set and a small safe containing cash and other valuables was stolen from a home on Carlan Drive, Port Perry. And on Harper, Road, about $1800 worth of tools and equipment was stolen from a garage. Cabinet minister urges 'Yes' vote More constitutional wrangling and fighting will hurt the Canadian economy, especially foreign investment, a federal cabinet minister told a meeting in Port Perry last week. Addréssing a group of Scugog business people, Tom Hockin, minister responsible for small business and tourism said "read the agreement and vote 'yes,' (in the October 26 referendum) This will be a boost to the economy." He went on to say later in a wide-ranging speech that touched on numerous topics that a positive vote in the up-coming referendum will be a "strong moral statement, a powerful atmospheric affect on provincial legislatures," even though the vote is not binding on any level of government. i ¥ i ¥ ¥ In the "B division final Port Perry Pizza Delight defeated A. Mr. Hockin was accompanied by Durham MP Ross Stevenson, and transport minister Shirley Martin. His early morning audience for the breakfast meeting at Emiels Restaurant included business people and Scugog Township councillors. Aside from the constitutional issues, he noted that the free trade deal with Mexico "has been totally mis-understood." Mexico, He said, already had wide access fo Canadian markets. "What we /have negotiated is access to wd Mexico (for Canadian goods and services) which will be very significant over time." Despite the fact Canada is caught up in a world-wide economic slowdown, Mr. Hockin said there are some positive signs. The federal deficit is now just 3.5 per cent of the country' s wealth. In 1984, it Was at eight per cent. Under the FTA, the export surplus has climbed from $13 billion to $21 billion, and the dolldr is down to about 82 cents in US currency. He went on to say that "prosperity initiatives" will be unveiled in the near future which will approach the economy Turn to page 2 ice fishing topic at public-meeting The, Ministry of" Whtural Resources hag'edlled a public meefingot October 7 to present «options on the Lake Scugog ~ winter fishery. The meeting will be held at the Latcham Centre in Port Perry, starting at 7:30 PM. MNR feels there is a problem with the winter fishing on Lake Scugog as walleye catch rates last season were less than half the lowest rate ever recorded. While the number of walleye taken over the winter was lower, the number of anglers increased and so did the total amount of fishing time. The MNR says it has come up with a number of options to deal with the problem, and some anglers have even requested that the winter fishery be closed. . The meeting on October hn examine those options and hear input from the public. ANID 8 0 SRR A 2-8 COE NN @) 04 55 SIN 0 1 31 TO AN
