marlene russell writer's blocks Rallying 'Round Réth Little Ruth had a heart attack. Her children (Michael's the one I'm married to) rushed to her side at Sunnybrook. None of us knew what to expect. But, there Ruth was holding court in the Cardiac Intensive Care Unit and having the time of her life. Ruth is one of life's rare treasures who sees an opportunity for a wonderful time whatever the circumstances. This latest serious jolt was no exception. When her attack started she, like so many others, wasn't quite sure what was happening. She tried to take her mind off her discomfort and when it couldn't be shaken decided a walk would do her good. Out of milk anyway, Becker's, a short block from her Leaside Gate senior's residence in Toronto, was the chosen destination. The milk walk showed no relief so after braving it out a few more hours she finally called for help. The hospital kept her in ICU a full week before, at 4 a.m. «if you please, she was awakened and moved to clear her bed for another emergency. Plunked in a wheel chair, loaded with personal paraphernalia she was ceremoniously escorted down the quiet and darkened hall to her new digs that barely saw the light of day before being discharged for home. Others might have complained about the rude awakening, not Ruth, she enjoyed the ride, feeling like an odd bride, potted mum in hand, being escorted down the aisle to her new life. I don't think she'd mind me telling you that she's 84. In the almost twenty years that I've known Ruth she hasn't aged a bit. Well, maybe just a little after the tumble down a complete flight of stairs. It happened as she ran past the stair and the railing caught her pocket, stopped her short, spun her around and then literally threw her to the basement. Stunned, she gathered herself up, crawled up the stairs and put I crain MARKET REPORT Prices quoted at market closing Monday. One of my kids. then pre-~hoolers, said, "A fall like that could kill a woman her age." Not, Ruth, it was a full week before she decided it might be an idea to have the doctor check her over. Did I mention she's spunky? Ruth's a little bugged now, however, the attack has left her "walking like a ligtle old lady,." 1 told her she reminded me of Sophia on 'The Golden Girls.' Every time I see her I half expect to see a purse in tow. At home, she'd graduated to walking like Sophia's younger sister when she landed back in hospital with fluid on her lungs. Something, the doctors say, is common until adjustments to medication have been made. Ruth is still not complaining but revelling in the fact that she's in the same bed, in the same room that she had briefly after the memorable 4 a.m. jaunt. Ruth has been quoted as saying, "Well, I didn't get a holiday this year so this has been nice." The unspoken words we all felt were, "I wouldn't have missed this for the world." There's more stories I could tell about Ruth like her environmentalist antics, she's the original one bag per week lady (garbage, that is)... or, how she logged a trip we took out west by recording everything we'd eaten (a woman after my own heart)... and, yes, she did bring all the hospital menus home...or, how it took her and I a day and a half (laughter included) to figure out what SOB meant on a hospital admission form. Maybe even some day she'll let me tell you about her undies, but not until her heart is much stronger. My five foot two, AND three quarter inch, frame towers over 'Little Ruth' but she's a woman I've always looked up to, and, always will.
