A (Second of two parts) CRUISE, CULKIN, REDFORD Tom Cruise will make an attempt to atone for "Far and Away" with his role in Rob Reiner's "A Few Good Men," an aflaption of the Pulitzer Prize winning play dealing with a court martial. --- Once again, 'advance reviews for this film have been astounding with high praise for Cruise, co-star Jack Nicholson and + Reiner's sure-handed direction. Cruisé has always done terrific work when he has strong actors and directors, thus an air of excitement surrounds this film. "If there is a sure fire hit for the autumn, it will undoubtedly be Home Alone-2 Lost in New York with pint size Macauly Culkin again on his own being pyrsued by Joe"Pesci and Daniel Stern. Culkin wanted (and got) something like $5 million for this film, which could end the money- maker of the year. . Robert Redford returns to the screen this fall with an acting role and at the helm of a very personal film. In a week or so, Redford will appear in a comedy thriller "Sneakers" starring Dan Ackroyd, Ben Kingsley, Mary McConnell and Sidney Potier. Directed by Philip Alden Robinson (Field of Dreams) this is a caper film about a group of spies hired to steal a very important black box. Redford took the role because he was "tickled with the script and he has always done his finest acting in comedy films: » Behind the camera, as-a directof, Redford has won an Oscar (Ordinary People, 1980) and given us a superb fable in "The Milagro Beanfield War, 1988) that should have attracted more attention than it did. This time out, he has filmed an obscure but poignant novel "The River Runs Through It with Bard Pitt. The film traces the lives of a close but troubled family in Montana, circa 1900. HEROES/CROOKS Stephen Frears' new film is entitled "Hero," yet is about how the media are able to create, then destroy a hero. Geena Davis is the TV newswoman who makes an un-willing hero out of Dustin Hoffman, then watches as his life crumbles. It's interesting to note that Miss Davis is the only woman in «Hollywood with a strong role this fall, at least a strong lead role. Are real estate agents crooked? With a high-powered cast featuring Al Pacino, Ale¢ Baldwin, and Jack Lemmon. (in a red-hot performance) the film is 4 feature at the Toronto Festival of Festivals this month. Hopefully, this will be Pacino's "great" performance, the one we have been waiting for since the early '70s. If it is not, maybe it will.be in the "Scent of a Woman," which sees him as a blind, very bitter war vet struggling to come to terms with his feelings towards a much younger woman. Pacino is capable of searing, brilliant work, but quite often he overacts, or selects the wrong script. Here's hoping he is on to something this year. ROBERT DE NIRO Robert De Niro will be featured in two films that are eagerly awaited simply because he is in them. The first, "Mad Dog and Glory," is an off-beat comedy (that's right) with De Niro as a newspaper man who saves a mobster played by Bill Murray. From that point on, the mobster feels a .sense of gratitude, which makes for some great laughs. The second De Niro film is of great interest because it co-stars Jessica Lange as his love interest; ironic becausg he terrorized her last year in Cape Fear, This time De Niro is a sleazy boxing promoter who falls hard for the wife of a bartender. The film is a re-make of a movie with Richard Widmark, and the inside word is strong. //BROCK R.V. Robin Williams is among the voices. Count on a smash success, but no best picture nomination. In closing, I should mention that Woody Allen's new film "Husbands and Wives" will indeed open this fall, and probably be a success due to the vicious separation between Allen and Mia, his co-star. It will be interesting to see a final film of them together, knowing what has since happened. But count on Woody to come through al this just fine. Sounds like a great way to end the year, which movie-wise anyway, will go out with a bang, not a whimper.
