Murder of sister prompts anti-TV violence petition A 13-year old Quebec girl has organized a nation-wide petition to reduce the amount of violence seen in television programming. Virginie Lariviere of St. Polycarp, a village near Montreal, came up with the idea of the anti-violence petition while attending the funeral last spring of her 11-year old sister Marie-Eve. On March 7, Virginie and Marie-Eve were visiting friends in Laval. Around supper-time Marie-Eve volunteered to go the local store to buy a loaf of bread. She never came back. Along the way she was robbed, sexually assaulted and murdered. Her killer has not yet been found. A happy-go-lucky, fun-loving, kind and generous young girl who loved to write, sing and dance, Marie-Eve would have celebrated her 12th birthday on Easter Sunday this year. Virginie says what happened has been a "horrible nightmare" for her and the family. Marie-Eve was "delicate, artistic, intelligent. She had a promising future, then nothing. Now she exists only in our hearts," says Virginie. In organizing this cross- country petition through the media (she now has more than 300,000 signatures) Virginie says she has no way of knowing whether TV violence had The Canadian Version of ... However, both she and Mar'e- Eve used to watch a lot of television and were concerned about the amount of violence. "I really believe television is a source of violence and that many people (especially women and children) are victims of this violence," she says. "I think if this (petition) can save just one life, it will be worthwhile." Not only has she received more than 300,000 signatures so far on petitions, hundreds of letters of support for her efforts have been sent her way from all over the country. She wants to present the petition before the end of the year to Prime Minister Brian Mulroney to ask the federal government through the CRTC to change programming laws to reduce the amount of violence seen on TV. Eventually, in a decade or so, violent acts would be eliminated completely. The Scugog Citizen has a copy of this petition and would be pleased to turn it over to any group or organization, along with Virginie Lariviere's address for anyone who wishes to write to show support for this cause.
