wr 15-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday , September 29, 1992 dumm CITIZEN SPORTS MoJacks set lineup for Sunday's opener by John B. McClelland It will be the "new look" MoJacks who hit the Scugog Arena ice this Sunday evening (Oct. 4) for the start of their 21st season of Junior C hockey in Port Perry. With just five players off last year's squad signed (as of Sunday night) to cards, the MoJacks are going with a "youth brigade" for the 1992-93 season. The team has signed five players off last year's all-Ontario Port Perry Midget squad, two from the Port Perry Juveniles who were all-Ontario finalists last season, and three from the Oshawa Midgets. General manager Murray Parliament said Sunday night he is more than pleased with the contingent of local players on this year's team "These guys really wanted to make this team. They are young and very eager to play. We are going to see some very entertaining hockey this season," he said after the team finished its final pre-season game with a well-played 6-3 victory over the Little Britain Merchants. As of Sunday evening the club, under new coach Brad Ryder and assistants Len Giacalone and Brad Menzies (both former players) had inked 18 players to cards for the coming season. Here's a run-down of the players already signed. GOAL: lan Cooper. Played superbly for the team last season. He's an over-ager this year. The club will make a decision on a second goalie this week between Shawn Larocque of Port Perry and Tim Wild from Oshawa. DEFENSE: Nathan Brown, Port Midgets; Steve Staniland, Port Juveniles; Brett Puckrin, MoJacks; Tyler Teel, SS Fleming College; Todd Dennis and Todd Youth Lob-ball ends another season with final tournament J The Port Perry Youth Lob Ball ended its 4th successful season with its tournament on Sunday the 27th. At 2:00 p.m. Centennial Lanes went 3 and 0 by beating McTaggart Electric 11-6. Dunkerleys and Marsh Hill had another close game, but the Jersey's came out ahead this time 7-4. Even though the Country Style Donuts were creamed by the Gators 17-7 at 3:15, they still d d to the Championship round to meet Centennial Lanes at 6:30 p.m.. Standard Electric with 15-8 win over Valu-Mart at 3:15 p.m. moved on to challenge McTaggart Electric in the Consolation round. After a short rest, the consolation round began. The Tth place finishing team (Mr. Morden's and "Loydette's" team) handed the 2nd place team a 13- 8 loss to capture the consolation plaques. Congratulations go to Standard Electric. "Did I say a "th" Place Team! Thank you goes to the men from the Men's Lob Ball League for doing another fine job of umpiring for us again this year. Thanks also to Brian Parsons for organizing and setting up the food for the Youth's BBQ. Members of the Youth Lob Ball thank their coaches and sponsors for donating to make this bar-b-que available and also to Don Finney and volunteer cooks who donated their time to bar-b-que. Thanks again to the Sponsors initial support to support Port Perry Youth Lob Ball for the season. Thank you Kevin, Gord, Sean, Derrick, Lawrence and everyone else that has umpired during the year for us. Finally, a thank you to the parents and fans for attending the games to cheer the players on. In the last four years the league has grown from 4 teams to 8 teams. I hope that more Youths register (On Time!!!) next year so we can start on time and perhaps enlarge to 10 or more teams. Watch for registration announcements early in the spring in the newspaper. Thank you for a good year, and I look forward to the next season. Byers, Oshawa Midgets; Brad Mizener, Rockton Junior C. FORWARDS: Jim Vernon, Jarrett Harman, Jeff Barr, MoJacks; Jody Logan, Steve Laird, Jason Cochrane, Shannon Todd, Port Midgets; Jan Heyes, Port Juveniles; Brad MacArthur, Wallaceburg Midgets; Greg Davidson, Oshawa Midgets. With Ian Cooper back for another season between the pipes, the team has a proven Junior C netminder. Though not "huge" along the forward lines, there is adequate size and no shortage of hard-nosed toughness in players like Vernon, Laird, Logan, Heyes and MacArthur who take a back seat to nobody on the ice And the defensive corps has good size, plenty of speed, mobility and puck handling ability The club is hoping to get Mike Coulson on a card for the coming season. He has indicated hell be at practise this week. Coulson is an outstanding skater, playmaker and scorer (he notched the winner in overtime last spring against Little Britain to give MoJacks the Central League championship) Mr. Parliament said he would be a welcome addition to the roster. Over the last couple of weeks, the team has had a busy pre- season schedule with eight games and the result was four wins, three losses and a draw. Mr. Parliament said the training camp (which began September 1) was a good one and the number of pre-season games gave the staff a chance to take & long look at all hopefuls under game conditions. In Sunday's final outing against the Merchants Jody Logan, Greg Davidson, Jarrett Harman, Jan Heyes, Brent Gaylor and Brad MacArthur had goals for the MoJacks Tyler Jenkins, Blaine Harris and Derek Kea replied for the Merchants who defeated MoJacks 5-3 last week on their home ice. The Merchants have a solid contingent of veterans from last year's team including netminder Brad Proulx, Steve Trumbull, Jeff Adams, Blaine Harris, and Derek Kea. The Merchants are giving all kinds of indications that they will be tough again in 1992-93. MoJacks get the "real" season underway this coming Sunday evening at 7:30 at the Scugog Arena when the Bobcaygeon Bullets pay a visit. Bullets are the new entry in the Central League this year as Cobourg Cougers will be playing at the Junior B level For the Youth Lob-ball A Division Championship it was Country Style Donuts over Centennial Lanes by a 16-13 score (see story at left for the detalls).
