Lorna reigns as "Queen of the Furrow" "I may be short and my name is long, but I'm proud of it." And rightly so. Lorna Durward, a twenty year old Brock/Scugog Townline resident, and the 1991/92 Queen of the Furrow for Rama/Mara Durham Plowman"s Association is a very active young lady. Lorna recently competed against thirty other women for the title of International Plowing Match Queen of the Furrow recently in Lindsay. While Lorna didn't 'place' in the competition she certainly had a lot of fun. To plow competitively you must have a coach. His/her job is to assist in setting the plow and watch for any obvious kinks in the field while the contestant plows. Brian DeGeer of Mt. Albert is her coach this year. Plowing isn't foreign to Brian. His dad, Ivan, is a director With the Intermational Plowman's Association; When Lorna asked him to be her coach for the International title he replied "no problem." When asked about the competition for the International Title she said, "it was a lot of fun. The girls came from all over, some were in University, others were working." The festivities for the Plowing Match got underway Tuesday, September 15th. All thirty contestants rode on the Queen of The Furrow float in the annual Plowman's Parade. Later, Lorna and her fellow contestants booked into the Bobcaygeon Inn. A boat cruise on The Skylark was enjoyed by all and a delicious dinner was served. That night the girls had a pyjamas party and got acquainted with each other. The next day was the actual competition. All the young ladies plowed, with the assistance of their coaches. Afterwards, interviews were held which lasted anywhere from 3:5 Changes will help truckers Ontario truckers who use load brokers - will now have a guarantee they will be paid, if the broker is registered with the provincial transportation ministry. Effective October 1, changes to the Truck Transportation Act will require load brokers to register with the Ministry, post a $10,000 bond and set up a trust fund.to hold money owed to truckers. Load brokers act as agents between truckers and a company needing goods shipped. Brokers find a trucker to haul the goods, collect payment from the shipper and then pay the trucker. The amendments will protect small trucking companies and independent truckers who suffer financially when load brokers default on payments. It is estimated there are over 200 brokers operating in the province, and until now, there have been no government regulations. The changes in the legislation do not mean that truckers must use the services of a load broker. But truckers who use registered brokers will reduce some of the risks in their business operations. The Ministry is now in the process of compiling a list of registered brokers. Truckers can check with the Ministry to see if a broker is registered and on the list. - minutes. Later that evening the girls went back to Olive's Art Gallery in Bobcaygeon. A luau party was enjoyed by all that evening. On Thursday, all 30 contestants gave their speeches in the afternoon before a panel of three judges. That evening was the crowning of The International Plowing Match Queen of the Furrow. Tammy Thompson representing Bruce County was crowned Queen. Incidentally, next year th Plowing Match is being held in her county, at Walkerton. Four princesses were also chosen. Miss Congeniality was Paula Conklin of Grenville. The Top Plowlady was Lisa Alderman from Lambton. The gala evening ended with a dance at The Moose Lodge in Lindsay. Does Lorna plow at home? "No" she grins, "I leave that job to my brother Leslie, and Dad." It was Leslie who got her involved in plowing three years ago. And Lorna knows her stuff. She reigned as the Rama Mara. Durham Plowman's Association Queen of the Furrow for 1990/91, is now finishing her 91/92 year and is currently competing for the '92/93 year.
