'The award Is for highest showmanship by 8 4-H Beef Club member on achlevement day. 4-H awards night On the Friday evening of October 23rd the Uxbridge Community Centre was filled with 4H members of the various Durham West Clubs and their famjlies commemorating their annual Awards Banquet. Debbie Fintelman was the chairlady for the evening. The guest speaker for the night was Barclay Phoenix, a young man from Dappledale Holsteins in Greenbank who had been selected to attend the world Dairy Expo in. Madison, Wisconsin. This show features the top dairy cattle in North America. * Barclay and three members from other 4-H Clubs in Ontario and their chaperorie left Port Perry on September 20th, touring farms in Western Ontario. It was a thirteen hour drive to Madison: the group arriving at their hotel Sunday afternoon. Tuesday was slated for a tour of the offices of Hoard's Dairyman, the National Dairy Farm Magazine, publishing semi-monthly. The members enjoyed a tour of the Dairy Museum and also invited the Hodrd's Dairy Farm where its guernseys are raised. On Wednesday morning the 'group toured the American Breeders Service Buildings and a tour of the far-famed Expo was held in the afternoon. Barclay summed up the trip as a "good experience and it was a chance to learn something new and meet new people sharing the same interests." Barclay is currently in a two year Farm Management Course at the University of Guelph. 000 ¥ All animals slaughteréd and sold in Ontario will be inspected, and all slaughterhouses will be required to renew operating licenses every year according to regulatory changes under the Meat Inspection Act.. The only exemption to inspection will be - for producers slaughtering animals for their personal use. "The changes will assure the public of the highest standards of food safety *, Ontario Minister of Agriculture nd Food Elmer Buchanan said. "The industry was extremely co-operative in helping us review and draft these regulations." Other changes include tightening sanitation requirements for plant facilities and strengthening sections of the regulations dealing with humane handling of animals, refrigeration requirements, industry, overtime costs associated with extended days and emergency slaughter will be charged back to the plant. ' "I'm also pleased to announce that my ministry has established a new program to assist abattoirs to comply with the regulations." Buchanan said. Under the one-year, $500,000 Abattoir Capital Assistance Program, funds will be made available'to areas of greatest need to ensure that abattoir services are available in all regions and to operators who are currently exempt and wish to meet licensing requirements by April 1, 1993. The program will pay up to 50 per cent, to a maximum of $20,000 per vlant, of the reasonable cost of upgrading plants that have been exempt from provincial inspection or processing conditions, and constructing abattoirs.
