pp Beugog Citizen -- Tuesday, November 10, 1003 -- 11_<a LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Literature "offensive," and "embarrassing" Continued from Page 8 homosexual relationship) It became obvious that there was a group of people in attendance, whose purpose was not to bring their children to learn more about teen-age issues, or to become more informed themselves, but to stress their opinions that panel members should not advise teens to use condoms, but to advise them not to have sex until marriage. (During the presentation, it was emphasized by the speakers that the only completely safe method of protecting against sexually- transmitted disease is absti e) There were other people In the audience asking questions of the panel, including one very articulate teen-ager on the side of facing the issue of teen sex and providing non-embarrassing access to condoms. As the questions being asked of the panel grew more heated, two women, seated with the above mentioned group directly behind my daughter and her friend, began speaking more loudly and shuffling papers in their laps. I was paying attention to the dialogue at the front of room when suddenly 1 heard the woman seated directly behind my daughter say something to her in slang that cannot be repeated in this paper. Shocked, | turned to see the person seated beside this woman showing a paper to my daughter. As my daughter later told me, the page was a photocopy of a young boy and adult male, both naked, engaged in a sexual act. My daughter had been turned toward her and now turned away, obviously very embarrassed. I was very shocked and said to the woman, "what makes you think she (my daughter) even knows was that means?" The woman replied, "she asked to see it." When I asked my daughter if she had asked to see it, she vehemently said no." I then turned to the woman said "you have no right to show her that. I am her mother and I will decide what she should see." The woman answered, "she has a right to know." I replied, "that is my decision to make, not yours." I was extremely upset and shaking, but did not want to disrupt the presentation any more than it already had been. I thought I would wait until the end of the meeting before speaking further with this woman. However, this person and her associate left before the meeting adjourned, so I did not have the opportunity. I went to this presentation hoping to have a pleasant and informative evening out with my daughter, providing her with information that would help her deal with some of the 188des that are facing teens. The meeting was well- organized by "Scugog Women," and well-addressed by the speakers. | have no issue with those who spoke out against the use of condoms: my outrage stems from the picture shown to my daughter and the language used to describe it. I understand that the Port Perry chapter of Canadians for Decency (CFD) may be asking that Scugog Township pass a by-law 80 that "no pornographic material shall be displayed in any manner or be visible to the public and that it be produced only request." My daughter did not ask to see the pornographic picture that was shown to her, or hear it described in the language of the gutter. My experience with this person who showed my daughter that picture and her associate who described it , was like turning over a rock and finding something disgusting I am left wondering just why she brought such a picture to the meeting that evening; it was certainly not available in upon any of the brochures being dispensed at the meeting. I can only hope that in the future, these women would learn when it is appropriate to keep their "research" material to themselves. If this inadent had involved only myself, I would be happy to slgn my name to this letter. My daughter has already been damaged enough by this experience and I don't want her to be teased at school. (Editor's Note: The Citizen agreed to the letter writer's request that her name not be made public) Speakers contradictions To the Editor: In regards to the article in the Scugog Citizen November 3 "Seminar Hears Candid Remarks on Important Issues of the 90's: Teen Stress, Sex Assault, AIDS." On reading the article, the very first thing that entered my mind was the title should have read: "Teens are stressed because we promote sex which can lead to AIDS." It is not my desire to minimize what the article was relating to, nor do I pretend to be an expert in all these areas. I do believe however, that through certain videos, television shows, magazines and other sources, it does not take a lot of effort to see that sex is promoted everywhere you look. Then, after sex, they come along and tell you, now when you decide to have sex, this is how you can protect yourself, get a condom. Do we not realize that we are eroding everything by that kind of thinking. The fact remains, that without moral principles and structure, everything comes apart at the seams. Sex should never be promoted before marriage and AIDS is the result of not staying within the moral structure. May I respectfully point out what I believe are some contradictions in what was reported in the article. For example, Larry explained "Condoms reduce (key word, reduce) the risk (key word, risk, there is a risk) of getting sexually transmitted disease. They don't eliminate it. Abstinence is the sole answer (key words, sole answer) to preventing the HIV virus or AIDS." Then later in the article, Tim's message was "if you have sex, for Heaven's sakes, take precautions." This has contradicted what Larry said about abstinence Then if we back up a bit to what Dr. Stewart said, "when a relationship between two people can become intimate, a decision between both parties should be protection to about prevent a pregnancy or infection." This statement has eroded what Larry said about abstinence Do we not realize that when we say one of these statements, that the one works against the other?
