wp 13-- Sougog Citizen -- Tuesday , November 10, 1003 du Barter system may be key to the 90's An Oshawa businessman has taken an age-old system of commerce and applied it to the lean, tough 1990's. International Barter Network (IBN) was formed just about a year ago by Mike Hood and partner Ken Yi And the « we 're working on that," Hood told the Citizen in a recent interview Here's how it works: for a $4756 "activation fee," a company becomes a member of IBN and opens a bartering barter idea seems to be catching on. From just one client in the Network a year ago, there are now more than 100 businesses from all over Durham Region that offer over 300 different kinds of services and products. The concept is simple enough: IBN works as the "middleman," or broker between businesses that want each other's goods or services, but don't want to pay cash. "About the only things we (IBN) can't do for clients is pay their taxes or utility bills. But The pany receives a directory of all other IBN members and an IBN credit card. If the company wants to use the services or buy goods from another company, it uses the credit card. IBN keeps track of the transactions and charges a five per cent brokerage fee. Barter dollars can be built up in the account and used whenever the company wants. IBN credits and debits the account when the transactions take place. Bartering, of course, has been around long before there were Groups retain lawyer With the Interim Waste Authority (IWA) expected to make public the "short Hst" of landfill sites for Durham by the end of this month, organizations in Scugog Township have hired a lawyer to help with the strategy. Zero Garbage and Pest announced that John Willms of the law firm Willms and Shier has been retained. He has been a lawyer for 18 years and also represents the Township of East Gwillimbury and York Region in the dump site selection process. Mr. Willms will be providing the Scugog citizens groups with strategy and advice and will help in any submissions made to the IWA if one of the five sites in Scugog Township ends up on the "short lst." ree of long list sites are currencies. And there has long been a so-called "hidden economy" where goods and services are "traded off under the table." IBN is legitimate barter, says Hood. "The government really like us." All transactions show PST and GST on the invoice and these are remitted by IBN. Clients get a statement of their account on a monthly basis. Hood, who has a background in marketing and advertising says there are numerous advantages for businesses who are members of the IBN. It can create new business; companies can obtain goods and services they ordinarily pay cash for; companies have access to an exclusive and wide variety of businesses; and transactions are conducted at fair market price. So what kind of businesses are now part of the International Barter Network? Here's a sampling: accounting, home renovations, graphic artists, limo services, asphalt and driveway sealing, printing, courier services, alarm systems, direct mail, antiques, pet food, appliances and parts, auto sales and repairs, even located near Highway 12, just dentistry. south of Manchester and two And several Scugog Township are located gop Highway 7A, and area businesses have about a mile west of Blackstock. |, IBN bers over the The IWA's "short list" | 4¢ year These include expected by the end of this month will narrow the number of potential sites for a Durham landfill down to four or five. a Fitzgerald Weed Control, Durward Driveway sealing, Port Perry Printing, Paulmac drop to make your cholce, and we'll do SCUGOG CITIZEN 36 WATER STREET, PORT PERRY Phone (416) 985-6396 Fax (416) 985-1410 Pet Foods, Summerlea Golf Course, Port Perry Auto Supply If a company accumulates more barter dollars than it can use, IBN will work with that company to see what goods or services in the network it may need. Hood likes to refer to himself and IBN as the "broker" that brings business together for the benefit of everyone.
