November month for Diabetes awareness Community Memorial Hospital is proud to be able to provide an intensified Diabetes Education Program to this community. In 1987 a revised Diabetes Program was set up to meet the growing needs of the community. The program presently provides educational classes, individual counselling for the adult with Diabetes and ongoing support. There are several types of Diabetes-the Type 1 diabetic who js the very young diabetic formerly called the juvenile diabetic. Canada has approximately 200,000 of these people in our country. The Type 2 diabetic is more common and was formerly classified as the maturity onset or older more senior diabetic. The Type 2 diabetic person is being diagnosed at the age of forty. This type, of diabetes usually does not require the taking if Insulin but is usually controlled by diet and exercise and sometimes pills. Canada has approximately 800,000 of these people in our country. Interestingly enough there are another 500,000 people walking around with early symptoms of Diabetes and have not contacted a doctor. This Diabetes Centre also services the Gestational Diabetic (better known as pregnancy of diabetes). These mothers usually require a diet and must monitor their blood until the birth of the baby. Since opening, in 1987, the Diabetes Center has had over 400 people through the Diabetes Program. The program has a registered dietician Joan Hood and the coordinator is Sandy McCully Certified Diabetes Nurse Educator. This program coordinator was the first in Durham region to take the exams by the Canadian Diabetes Association! and become certified. We are proud of the quality of care being provided to this community and we are more than pleased to have a group like the Blue Ray Chapter of the Order if the Eastern Star who have raised considerable funds to help bring you a better program through their donations to the program. Extra funds help to provide ongoing education for the staff and to provide many of the teaching tools needed to make learning easier for the person with Diabetes. The Diabetes Program is available to anyone who has Diabetes however entry into the program must be with a referral from your family doctor because he too is an integral part of the diabetic team.
