CNH Petites goon a big scoring rampage The Community Nursing Home Petites dominated their second consecutive opponent. Last week it- was a 19-0 drubbing of Markham 1 Recording her second shutout of this young season was Jennifer Hammond. Jennifer made some impressive stops despite the lopsided score. One early in the game doing the splits, another later in the game while lying flat on her back stretching out the stick to preserve the shutout Every player on the ice had the chance to play forward and defence. It's nice to see the unselfish nature of these girls who are willing to learn another position to better the team in the future. The only player who did not make the score sheet was Miranda Burgess who skated miles in helping other girls get their first goals of the year. Leading the scoring barrage for the Community Nursing Home was regular defence player Lauren Christie with 4. Her defence partner Jennifer Imrie had 3 and Leanne Davison showing new confidence had 3 Players who each had a pair are Jennifer Donnelly, Melissa Hooker and Lisa Lafort. Singles went to Bantam B's blank Friday the 13th proved unlucky for the Uxbridge Bantam B's as the Port 'Stars' rolled through town with a convincing three to nothing win. Dylan Ferguson provided the necessary stellar backstop performance, turning aside all eleven shots. Throughout all three periods the forward lines played good team oriented offence putting a goal a period. Kevin Gray scored unassisted in the first frame and again in period two off a crisp pass from Daryl Moase. In the third period Brad Mordon ended the scoring after being set-up by Greg Thompson The good team effort paid double, both on the scoreboard and in the stands as everyone enjoyed the hockey. The wrist shot is a surprise shot that depends on quickness of release and accuracy more than the strength of the shooter. Its quickness is valuable around the opponent's net, where time and space are limited. The hand grip is similar to the stickhandling grip, with the lower hand a little further down the shaft for extra power. Start with the puck well back of the body, cupped towed the heel or centre of the blade, with the player's weight on the back leg, and wrist cocked. The player then sweeps the stick across the body, propelling the puck toward the toe of the blade, while weight is transferred to the front foot and the head is looking at the target. To provide power, the lower arm pushes and the upper arm pulls. As the puck is released, wrists are snapped through, the bottom wrist flexing and whipping the stick through low and towards the target. The backhand wrist shot is similar in technique, except that there is a limited transfer of weight. When developing the wrist shot with young players, have them start by practicing with tennis balls in a stationary position, on and off the ice, shooting at low and high targets. Progress to the stationary drill with pucks, and then to having players shoot while skating towards the boards Players can then progress to drills using goaltenders, incorporating puckhandling skills.
