-- "Road to Mecca" on stage The work of one of South Africa's best known playwrights will come to life January 29 as the Durham Shoestring Performers present "The Road to Mecca." The drama was written by Athol Fugard, and has been described as his "wisest, most balanced and most universal play." Ed Daigle of Port Perry has landed one of thilh ree roles as the village pastor Marius Byleveld. Mary Vollmer will portray Miss Helen and Patty Gilhooly is Elsa Barlow. Set in rural South Africa, this extraordinary drama reveals personal insights as it presents Miss Helen, an eccentric widow who has spent the years since her husband's death transforming her home into an intricate and dazzling work of art. Mr. Daigle told the Citizen that theatre goers will find this a compelling yet hopeful drama about the clash between conformity and individual liberty. "I was very pleased to get the role," said Mr. Daigle. Thies will be his third appearance with Shoestring Performers.
