wp 36-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, January 19, 1993 4a CITIZEN SPORT SHORTS Port Perry Legion Pee Wee Well folks, it appears as though the marathon brain storming session well into the pre-dawn hours by TENO-GEER and company in Kingston two weekends ago has produced very positive results. Their "legion" pee wee hockey ¢lub has been on a roll ever since, and Friday night's game in Port Perry against Uxbridge was just another roa: display of what these boys can by defeating Uxbridge 8-4. Port opened the scoring on a goal by Shane "Snortin™ Norton assisted by Danny Lyons and Scotty Jeffrey. Usxbridge managed to tie the score at 1 and then Daryl McEnaney put Port ahead 2-1 with assists going to Rob Murphy and Mike Heasman. Two minutes later, Daryl grabbed his second goal of the game with the help of Scott Heffern. The second period saw Uxbridge bang in 2 goals to tie the score at 3- 3. But with the help of Mike Heasman and Daryl McEnaney, Rob Murphy was able to pull Port ahead. A couple minutes later, the duo of Shane Norton and Danny Lyons fed Scotty Jeffrey who made no mistake on where he wanted that puck! Uxbridge retaliated with one more goal to make it 5-4 for Port at the end of the second. The entire third period belonged to Port Perry as they dominated this frame preventing Uxbridge from scoring any goals. Port was busy though with Scotty Jeffrey notching his second goal of the night with the help of Scott Heffern and Danny Robinson. Then Daryl McEnaney picked up a hat trick thanks to Rob Murphy and Scott Heffern. The final minute of the game saw Rob Murphy make the score 8-4 for Port with assists going to Daryl McEnaney and Scott Heffern. That too was Rob's second goal of the game. The goaltending duties were looked after by Luke Carnaghan and Kent Johnson who as usual, came up big when needed. This game concludes the regular season schedule. On Saturday, Jan. 23, the Legion Pee Wee's will be participating in their home tournament at the Scugog Arena. Drop by and catch some of this great action; you won't be disappointed. On Sunday Jan. 24 the boys travel to Stouffville to begin their first round of playoffs with the second game scheduled in Port Perry on Monday, Jan. 25. If the regular season is any indication of the type of hockey this team is capable of, then the playoffs will be even more exciting for the players, coaches and parents. Good Luck. Techstar Bantams The Techstar Bantam "B" team travelled to the cold confines of the Millbrook arena on Thursday evening, putting on what can only be described as a lack luster performance. The hosts were in complete control from the opening face-off, dominately the play for almost the entire game. With the score 2-1 in favour of Millbrook after one, Port looked like they could rebound and salvage a win. Millbrook continued their onslaught and pumped a ton of rubber in the direction of Dylan Ferguson. The forwards appeared to hear footsteps behind them all night and the defence had more giveaways then Ed Mirvish. As they say, "the cream rises to the top" and Millbrook certainly proved who was the the better team on this particular night, handing Port an 8- 3 pasting. Techstar markers were notched by Jeff Jamieson with two and a single by Brad Morton. This should conclude regular season play. Techstar looks forward to a tournament in Brighten on the weekend and will likely begin play- offs the week after. Hopefully this last performance can be attributed to preoccupation with upcoming examinations. YMCA Floor Hockey The Leafs met the Canadiens in Junior Floor Hockey action on Monday, January 11 at RH. Cornish. The opening game of the session ended in a 2-all tie with both teams playing well. Bavid Halward scored both Leaf goals. Reid Harris opened the scoring for the Canadiens with Tyler Houthuys adding their second goal. Anyone 6-8 years old who is interested in joining the floor hockey program is welcome to come out Monday nights at 6:30 p.m. at Cornish P.S. Intermediate The first intermediate game of the second session was between the Blue Bombers and the Mighty Ducks. The Blue Bombers took an early lead with 4 goals in the first period. Craig Cannon fired in two of the Bomber's goals with Spencer Churchill and Adam Youmans bringing the total to 4. Matt Brown we] Jay Peak - Vermont SNO BOWL CHALETS and scored the Mighty Duck's single goal of the first period. Craig Cannon racked up another two Bomber goals to bring the total to 6. This gave him 4 goals for the game! The Mighty Ducks fought hard to catch up with Steven Doan and Jason Lown, each popping one in the net. This brought the Duck's total to 3. The second game in the intermediate division saw the Red Wings meet the Golden Rods. The Red Wings took an early lead with 2 goals by Carlos Connell and Jason Isa. Chris Murphy of the Golden Rods popped in their single goal of the first period. Chris Langford fired in the Golden Rods second goal while they held the Wings scoreless in the second In a fast-paced third period Michael Wiseman and Carlos Connell racked up, goal a piece to bring the Wing's total to 4. Chris Langford of the Golden Rods earned himself a hat trick with 2 more goals in the third period. Kevin Duncan fired in the Golden Rod's 5th goal, giving them the victory for the evening. XL Novice Ringette On January 17, the Port Perry XL Gas Bar Novice team was in Ajax for one final encounter before the playoffs start on Jan. 30. With the thrill of last week's gold medal win at the Port Perry tournament still lingering, the girls took to the ice with a need to "keep on trucking." And that's just what they did as the steamrolled their way to a resounding 17-2 victory over a weaker and less experienced Ajax team. But this game gave our younger and less experienced players a chance to rise to the occasion. Janna Ostafichuk was in goal and though she had a fairly quiet time of it, she kept her concentration and played a steady back-stop for the team. Coach Virtue's pre-game pep talk centred on the importance of passing the ring to set up players in the open. It worked as everyone was involved in the scoring. Here they are: Alaina Davis, 1 goal, 3 assists; Nicole Virtue, 2 goals, 3 assist. Shannon Warriner, 1 goal, 4 assists; Jill Pashley, 3 sts; Jackie Pashley, 1 goal, 2 assists; Alaina Burger, 1 goal; Sarah Verschuuren, 1 goal, 3 as Leanne Layzell, 3 goals, 1 asi Kristen Waller, 1 goal (first of the season and a lighter Dad's wallet) N ist; Heather Reid, 1 goal, 3 assists, Rhea Baxter, 1 goal; Katherine Cooke, 3 goals. There was a loud cheer in the dressing room for the Ajax team that never gave up. In a lop-sided game, it's tough for both coaches-- one trying to keep spirits up, the other trying to pull in the reins. 8o far for the XL girls and their families this has been a fun season and with playoffs just around the corner, let's hope the fun continues as they improve and grow with the game. Stay tuned for more results next week. Larocque 6 - Scala 5 This was a barn burner both teams went toe to toe. With big saves from Dann Lee to give Larocque a big win. With the line of Dave Kamminga, Paul Shrigley and Brad Fraser having a big night with 11 points Rookie Dave Kamminga getting his first hat trick along with 1 assist. Brad Fraser getting his second of the year along with 2 assists and with center Paul Shrigley picking up 3 assists. Greg Ranier having his best skating game of the year picked up his first goal ever with assist going . to Justin Sheehey. Chris Jamieson had 1 goal and 1 assist. For Scala, Jay Fletcher had 2 goals. Ashley Van Shelton with 2 go Tommy Keeble with 1 goal and an assist going to Travis Pickard and Paul Brain. CNH Petites Following a silver medal in last weekends tournament play, the Community Nursing Home Petites were back in league competition. The opponent was the Ajax 'B' squad. Play went end to end early in the game before the "wrinkles" girls fell behind 1-0. Our girls continued to press and held and advantage in territorial play. Period one ended with Ajax clinging to their slim lead. The Nursing Home girls continued having problems solving the opposition netminder until Melissa Hooker skated across in front of the net from right to left and slid a wrist shot along the ice into the glove hand corner to tie the score with an unassisted marker. On her next shift, Melissa decided to give the same move another try. The Ajax goalie hadn't learned from Melissa's lesson. Port was ahead 2-1 on another unassisted goal by Melissa. Who was the smarter of the two, the Ajax goalie or Melissa? If it works, why not continue to try it until it is stopped. On her next shift, Melissa snapped a wrist shot about 6 inches off the ice into her favourite corner. Port was ahead 3-1 with 5:50 to play. Starting this play in our own end was Jennifer Imrie who moved the ring up ice quickly to Leanne Holt who spotted Melissa on the right wing. Playing another strong game in net was Jennifer Hammond, who was called upon when, Alicia Burgess was unable to take her turn in net because of a head injury. the defense of Cathy Céoper, Jennifer Imrie, Lauren Christie dnd Miranda Burgess played a verdbg checking game, clearing the ring and limiting the Ajax chanc The forwards, Julia Leamen, Leanne Davison, Leanne Holt, Jennifer Donnelly and Lisa Lefort contributed with strong efforts that presented difficulties for the opposition.
