Head table from left: Bill Ingram, Durham East MPP Gord Mills, Durham MP and guest speaker Ross Stevenson, Howard Gauthler, Scugog Mayor Howard Hall, and Zone 45 East District A-16 Chairman Don Cliff. Well known columnist guest speaker on taxes Linda Leatherdale, Financial Editor of the Toronto Sun, will be the featured speaker at a public meeting being sponsored by the Taxpayers Coalition of Victoria County at 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 3rd at Lindsay's Admiral Inn Ballroom, located on Highway 1. A leading commentator on business, political, and personal finance issues, Ms. Leatherdale will explain why taxpayers are finally rebelling and what the solutions are to what she calls "tax madness". High taxes are killing off small businesses and the middle class here in Victoria County and throughout Ontario, says Ms. Leatherdale. "Out-of-control government spending means you and I are getting poorer." Coalition President Doug Hindson says the meeting is open to the public and admission is free. Because seating capacity is limited to 400 and entrance is on a first come basis, he says it's advisable to get there early. A popular Toronto journalist, Linda Leatherdale "has championed the cause of overtaxed businesses and the middle class", says Mr. Hindson. Henshall's "Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, Jan 1993--17 Don't expect GATT speed-up farmers told Canadian farmers likely won't see any changes in the stalled GATT talks for at least a month or two, possibly longer, Durham MP Ross Stevenson said last week. Addressing the 4th annual "Farmers Right hosted by the Blackgtock and District Lions Club, Stevenson said the change in administration in the United States will hold any major movement on GATT for the next while. "Personally, I would not be surprised to see the negotiations continue on for another year," said the veteran MP who is an expert in agricultural issues, and a former provincial agriculture minister in Ontario. He added that Canada and other small nations are sticking to the position-that an agency is needed. to enforce the rulings made under GATT Addressing about 100 people at the Farmers Night in the Cartwright Rec Centre, Mr. Stevenson said the overall picture for Canadian farmers is improving as exports of several commodities continue to rise: processed meats are up 13 per cent, grain products 20 per cent and some processed food exports are up as much as 63 per cent. Exports of Canadian textiles and clothing are also up 19 and 40 per cent respectively. LIMITED "They were supposed to drop dead in the last year," said Mr. Stevenson. He agreed that the lower Canadian dollar is helping our export picture, but added that many of the positive trade trends were set before the dollar started its downward plunge last August. While agreeing with a member of the audience that the manufacturing sector has been hit hard with job losses, he said "here in Durham, the number of jobs has gone up five per cent." He suggested that Canadian companies that have made adjustments are in better shape that their counterparts south of the border, and the the manufacturing picture in Canada will improve over the next 3-6 years Asked a direct question from the floor whether there will be extra money to help Ontario corn growers facing a disastrous crop year, Stevenson said not likely. Any extra money will come through existing programs like NISA and GRIP, he stated. The Blackstock and District Lions raised about $400 through Farmers Night. This money will be used for blindness prevention programs, said Club member and Zone chairman Don Cliff. PZANSIV SR (443) PORT PERRY 985-1965 < Small to Plus Sizes Plus Other In-Store Specials!
