itizen Tuesday , February 2, 1993 <= Big Walleye Derby coming this weekend scugog outdoors with john ellis One year ago | wag, frétting about the success of the first Caesarea firefighters walleye tournament. But thanks to a last minute surge I was finally able to sleep the last couple of nights before the tournament. Needless to say the tournament ticket sales exceeded my expectations and I was able to present the winner of the tournament with three hundred dollars. But the best part of our tournament is that I was able to present $600 in cash to Operation Scugog which helps some of the needy families in the Township of Enough about last year. February 6-7 has my attention right now. Interest has been brisk and I am hoping to surpass last year's expectations. Most of the rules are standard to all tournaments. 1) Tickets must be purchased prior to fishing; 2) If two or more fish weigh the same the first fish entered is considered to be the heaviest; 3) No angler is eligible to win more than two prizes; 4) Personnel at the weigh station have the right to reject any fish for any reason; 5) Walleye over 1lb. are the only fish that are eligible to be entered; 6) Walleye angled from Lake Scugog are the only fish that are eligible. There are several other rules that are in place. A list will be available at the weigh station or upon request. Now to the best part, the winning. There will be 10 prizes available. Four of the prizes will be cash. They will be awarded as such. First place will receive 50% of the anglers share (last year $300). Second place is 256%. Third place is 15% and the heaviest fish of the tournament will receive 10%. In the junior division there will be a first and second place winner which will be a collection of prizes. There will be one hidden weight prize. As for time and place, fish must be angled between the hours of 12:01 a.m., Saturday, Feb.6 to 12:00 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7. Lake Scugog is the fishing grounds. The weigh station will be at the Caesarea public pier and the hours of operation will be from 8 a.m.- 6 p.m. Saturday and from 7 am. - 12 p.m Sunday. Tickets ($10.00) will be available at weigh station during those hours. Virtually everything tournament related has been covered except the weather and nobody I know can do much about that one. Let's all hope the weather is a little warmer than last year. A final note or two - the prizes will be awarded at 12:30 p.m. Sunday Feb. 7 at the Caesarea Community Hall. All people are welcome to come out and participate. How about all you can eat pancake breakfast? Sounds good to me. Imagine all you can eat for a mere $4.00. Drop by the Caesarea hall from 7 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and partake in this breakfast feast. Hope to see you there. Tips & Hints: The weather sure has taken a tilt lately. Not too many fellows have been out fishing, at least that I have been talking to. It would appear that jigging has been accounting for the lions' share of the action recently. Look for your best action in 4-7 feet of water very close to weed lines The Pickering Fishing Show was a success from my perspective. Most exhibitors reported increases in sales and interest over the last couple of years. | was very happy to see many people from the Township of Pickering. Even Mr.. Mayor Howard Hall dropped in at the show for a look around. I hope everyone enjoyed themselves. For tournament info give me a call at 986-0934. Famous Walker property topic for public meeting The Uxbridge Conservation Association will be presenting an evening devoted to the Walker Property--its history and its future. Guest speakers are James and Olwen Walker, along with Ian Deslauriers from the Metro Toronto Conservation Authority. The meeting will take place Thursday, February 11 at 7:30 PM in the Tokai Room at Uxbridge Public Library. The meeting is open to the public and there is no charge. The huge Walker Property conservation project began back in 1934 when the Walkers bought an abandoned log farmhouse on four acres of wasteland. Gradually, they acquired 13 more parcels of windswept land from disillusioned farmers. Today, after planting more than two million trees, land once considered useless is green again. Mr. Deslauriers' talk will include slides of examples of trails in easter and western Canada, Great Britain, Germany and the United States. He will discuss the principles of signage, mapping, construction and trail programs. The Uxbridge Association is working with the MTRCA and farm manager John Rose in developing a marked trail system. Volunteers are invited to participate in this project. The Uxbridge Association plans to cross country ski/hike on the Walker Property on February 14 at 2:00 PM.
