wpJ0-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday , February 9, 1993 4 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Port Fairgrounds part of our heritage To the Editor: A large area of land in Port Perry has once again become . the target of debate once again between the Scugog Township council and the Port Perry Agricultural Society (the Fair Board) : The future plans for the Fairgrounds are in jeopardy unless the ten year lease can be secured with the Township of Scugog. The Fairgrounds have been in Local hospital just the best To the Editor: An un-expected stay of five days in our local hospital made me realize how thankful and fortunate we should be to have this fine facility in our town. During my recent stay there I was treated with the best of care and attention. Everybody was 80 kind and friendly, from those who cleaned the room and made up the bed to the nurses and doctors. They all made me feel welcome and comfortable. When I needed something they were there, when I needed to talk, they found the time. A special thanks to my neighbour Sue Morris from the Medical Centre for her promptness and Dr. Mercer for being there when I needed him. From the bottom of my heart, I thank you all. Room 108 will be in my memory for a long time. Yours truly, Dave Barkey, Port Perry. of the icipality since they were bought in 1910. The land is zoned "parkland" and has been leased by the Agricultural Society for many years. The Society has maintained the grounds and buildings through many volunteers over many years. Many residents of the community drive by the open greenbelt area unaware of the varied uses through the entire year. Of course, the three-day Fair on Labour Day weekend is considered the main event and draws large numbers of people into this community. Last year, a baseball organization was formed and a baseball diamond constructed on the Fairgrounds. Teams of young people enjoy this sport five nights each week. During the summer until final harvest, a large variety of local, fresh farm produce is old Saturday mornings at the Farmers Market. Magically, the Fairgrounds were transformed into a miniature Tent City when the local Scouting Association hosted a Cubaree last summer. Other popular events include the Car Show and Tractor Pull. Through the year, morning and evening, many local residents take advantage of the free open area to walk, jog or exercise the dog. And the horses exercising on the track are a familiar sight. All of these sights, sounds and events make Port Perry what it is: a mixture of the residential and the rural merging together. For many years, the Fair Board has provided through vol 8, 8 maintained without cost to the tax-payer. The $1,000 from the council is just 0.85 per cent of of the Board's operating costs. Should council decide to control this land, the maintenance would become the Township's responsibility, thus more tax dollars would be required. Grant money is available to the Board, but not to the Township. The lease (which runs out in 1997) must be extended for ten years in order for the Board to qualify for grants. More and more areas--of parkland located within community sense of values, a feeling of pride only accomplished when everyone pulls together to complete a job. Looking ahead to the future these basic values and principles must be protected and nurtured for our children and generations to come. Société des loteries de I'Ontario g ON. are being viewed by officials as a source of revenue. Technical problems have already been mentioned about the. capacity of the Port Perry sewage treatment system. Should the council sell the property, what would be the cost to the community in the future? As Port Perry has expanded to the north, the Fairgrounds are no longer on the outskirts of town. This area must be maintained for parkland. Replacement costs to move the Fairgrounds would be impossible in this time of restraint and limited tax dollars. Di ion will occur b the council and the Fairboard: on Feb. 16 as to the future plans for the grounds. This is part of our heritage. Now is the time to speak to your elected rep to make them aware how you feel. Do you want to get involved? You are welcome to join, attend a meeting or just volunteer to help. The Fair Board's next meeting is March 3, 8:00 PM at the Medical Centre, Paxton St. in Port Perry. P.S. Farming is not a prerequisite. Alice Lee, member, Aauette Desctiam pa R.M.T.
