Farm Family Advisors offer empathy and help Most people would agree that the farm community has seen more than its share of financial set-backs over the last decade. But in certain parts of Ontario, this season has dealt an especially serious economic blow. For producers in financial stress, there is help from the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food. OMAF can provide on request, the service of a Farm Family Advisor. This person is a fellow farmer, from a distance to assure the utmost fidentiality, who is capabl of all the necessary financial paper work of production forecasts, monthly cash flow, asset-liability statements and debt service calculations. If requested by the farmer, the Advisor will attend meetings with creditors and suppliers to help work out solutions. The Advisor's job is to understand the farm business, outline possible options and recommend the best apparent course of action. The strength of an Advisor is in the role of peer counsellor, a person from the same background and kind of farming operation. And of course, confidentiality is always maintained When it comes down to options and solutions, there is no new magic. It all comes down to variations of re- financing, partial asset . liquidation or down-sizing, pursuit of additional income from off-farm or the complete liquidation of the farm business in as orderly a manner as possible. It will likely be the first time the farm family has had to face tough choi ike these, and it is here where the Advisor can be especially helpful. GREEN APPLE CABINETS HARVEY J. WALKER 985-3767 Most Advisors have worked at their roles for several years. Many have also worked with the Farm Debt Review system. A further very important strength is the willingness of the Advisor to take that extra time, often late at night around the kitchen table when the talk turns from production numbers, debt servicing and refinancing options to the equally crucial issues of emotional feelings, impact on the family and status in the community. All fellow farmers share the same sense of time and place; a common bond that perhaps a professional consultant, banker, creditor or supplier may not understand quite as well. When it comes to raising money for a worthy cause, they know what their doing. Just why the name "Hair Bags" isn't clear, but this group of young people walked into the Community Hospital one day last week and turned over $1400 to the Hospital's Equipment Purchase Fund. The money was the net proceeds from the 3rd Annual New Year's Eve Bash held at the Kinsmen Hall in Port Perry. J The first bdsh raised $500 for the Cancer Society; the second one netted $800 for Missing Children Fund, and this year $1400 for Hospital Equipment. This donation will be put specifically towards the Hospital purchase of a colonoscope which costs over $30,000, said Debbie McGarry of the Hospital foundation. Kevin Wilson, Tracy Nippard, Addam Jorz and Ray Edwards were present to turn the money over to Ms. McGarry last week. They had plenty of help in organizing and running the New Year's Bash and mentioned Jamie Ellins, Shawn Phillips, Rick Rowe, Ritchie Stapleton, Shane Cochrane and Cheryl McKean. Ms. McGarry said it is very encouraging that young people have become involved in fund- raising for community causes.
