wp §6-- Scugog Citizen -- Tu => day , February 9, 1993 Cold day for Firefighters Walleye Derby by John Ellis Did somebody mention the weather? I think most certainly or maybe or possibly it was me. As everyone is aware the weekend was fit only for the production of frozen treats. I did have to mention the weather last week. Weigh station attendants for the 2nd Annual Caesarea Firefighters Association Walleye Tournament for the most part looked and felt like - sicles. Pmaks Jeff Handlesberger and Bob Jones-fer.your much needed help. This year's winner, Steve Delyea of Oshawa, bagged a whopping 28.37 pounds of Walleye. Second place went to Bernie Emberg also of Oshawa with > 25.78 pounds. Third place went to Tom Kopp of Ajax with 13.49 pounds. Keep in mind these weights were achieved with only a six fish total weight. The heaviest fish went to Steve Delyea with a 7.07 Ib. walleye. The hidden weight prize went to Keith Mullins with 1.76 Ib. walleye. This year to my amazement there was not a single entry in the junior division. Not even one ticket was purchased by a youth 12 years or yainger. I found myself with two prizes I was unable to award. Problem solved, two additional draw prizes were awarded, raising the chances for all who bought a ticket. The draw prize winners were Jerry Fowler from Derby organizer John Ellis with Corinne Woods (left) who accepted $210 for new playground equipment in Putsey Park, and Ann Wanninkhof who accepted $205 for Operation Scugog. Blackstock, Bill Martin, Ed Sobezak and Gord Gettins all from Caesarea. The major draw prize was awarded to Brian Taylor also from Caegarea. Brian is the recifhent of a charter for six people out on Lake Ontario. Now to the thank-you's. Where to start is always the toughest. Many thanks to Canadian Tire, Twice Told Tales, and Lakeview Beer Brew, all from Port Perry, Beverly Ann's Creations from Caesarea, the Fish N' Canada folks from Oshawa, D&R Sports from Whitby and Blackstock Esso.Without your gracious gifts the tournament would not be so successful. A special thanks to Gagnon Sports for the use of the weigh scales. It was very much appreciated, not to mention all the terrific prizes. The hidden heroes definitely not forgotten are Pauline and staff at the Sunnyside Market in Caesarea. They did a great job with the ticket sales. Once again this year a great effort was put forth by Dale and the guys at J.D. Fishing and Archery. Thanks for the help with ticket sales and the great prizes: Last but not least Fishing's It for the charter for six again this year. The most rewarding part of the weekend is the ability to give Operation Scugog and the Putsey Park fund, needed money to reach their goals. This is rewarding and pleasing. Finally the Caesarea Firefighters Association thanks all the participants and donators because without all of you the tournament could not be a success. Tips & Hints: A lot of the fish and in particular the larger ones that were weighed in were angled in less then 5 ft. of water. Give it a try; it could be your ticket to'stocess. Bye for now. Steve Delyea (right) won the Firefighters Walleye Derby for the second year In a row. With Steve Is fishing partner Tom Kopp of Ajax, Steve also won for the largest fish, a beauty that weighed In at 7.07 ibs.
