wy Scugog Citizen -- Tuceuay, February 8, 1993 23 _~ -- CITIZEN SPORTS] MoJacks-Bruins in playoff barn burner Port leads best of seven series two games to one The Port Perry MoJacks and Uxbridge Bruins are doing battle in a playoff series that is quickly becorhing an old- fashioned barn burner. After taking a 2-0 lead in games in this best of seven affair, MoJacks were hoping to put a 3-0 stranglehold on their bitter rivals, but the Bruins had other ideas as they came back with a 3-1 overtime victory on Sunday in front of a large, noisy crowd at the Scugog Arena. Second period goals by Chris Winn of the Bruins and Steve Laird of the MoJacks stood up for 60 minutes and sent the game into a straight tea minute OT period. The Bruins Steve Brown got the winner with 3:44 left off a scramble in front of MoJack goalie Roy Kennedy. And they salted this one away in the final minute with an empty netter by Steve Dick. Despite the close score this was an entertaining, wide-open game with Kennedy turning in a stellar performance in the cage as he faced 48 shots. And it was a rough and tumble affair with ref Don Daigle dishing out nearly 100 Port Perry MoJack forward Shannon Todd Is the Rookie of the Year In the Central Junior C hockey league. He recélved the Percy Macklin Memorial Trophy from league convenor Andy McLauchlan prior to the start of last Thursday's playoft opening game with Uxbridge. Shannon led MoJacks in scoring with 29 goals and 42 assists In regular season play. Winter Lob Ball If you happen to be driving along Water Street last Sunday and noticed some folks playing baseball in the snow, relax. You weren't hallucinating or ireaming of spring. League convenor Jon Dawson aid the idea was to "have ome fun," even with the fields reavy with smow and a chilly ip in the air. . When all the dust (sorry, now) had cleared Brian AcTaggart Electric defeated he Lil Gators to take home ome nice trophies, while the tators received medallions. All players received "I Survived the Snowball Tournament" t-shirts, said Mr. Dawson. He thanked Brian McTaggart for his financial support, Gail Pelrine for arranging for food and working the snack bar with Bev Dawson, all the coaches and of course, all the young people who showed up. They had their chances, especially on the power play, but came up shooting blanks. After taking the opener 7-5, MoJacks went up 2-0 in games with an overtime win of their own Friday night in Uxbridge. The teams were tied 4-4 after regulation after the Bruins scored late in the third to draw even. But with 4:48 left in OT, Jarrett Harman popped in the winner off a scramble, and a minute later, Jim Vernon put the icing on this one as he snared an errant pass and made no mistake deep in the Bruin zone. Bruins took a 2-1 lead into the dressing room after 20 minutes on goals by Jamie Showers and Jason Underwood, with Jody Logan getting the marker for Port Perry. Clair Cornish, with his first of two tied things early in the second, but the Bruins went up 3-2 on a marker by Steve Dick. Logan got his second of the game short-handed as he was sent in alone by Vernon and beat Harnden with a rising shot. Cornish gave MoJacks a 4-3 lead early in the third on a blistering shot that found the top corner and it stayed that way until 11:37 when Curtis Hudgins slapped home a rebound to send the game into extra innings. SERIES OPENER The MoJacks got the series off on the right foot last Thursday evening at the Scugog Arena with a 7:6 victory over the Bruins. The game was closer than the score as the MoJacks broke things open early in the third with three goals in just over three minutes to take a commanding 7-3 lead. The Bruins got a couple back and applied considerable pressure late in the contest but the MoJacks held the fort to go up 1-0 in the series. Steve Laird staked the team to a 1-0 lead late in the first on a strange goal that just barely trickled across the line. Bruins went ahead 2-1 early in the second as Jason Underwood . and Darryl Bricknell beat Ian Cooper. Jim Vernon tied it at 12:13 conyerting a Clair Cornish pass from behind the net. Late in the period, Jason Cochrane put the MoJacks up for good while the team enjoyed a two- man advantage and a minute later Shannon Todd made it 4- 2 as he walked in un-touched, put a deke on Jeff Reid and slid the disc into the wide open cage. Bruins Jamie Showers scored on a power play at the 44 sec mark of the third before the MoJacks erupted for three fast ones to put the game on ice. Cochrane with a clever short- handed effort for his second of the game, then Frank :Kavanaugh on a long shot through a crowd and finally 'Cornish who cut through the slot from the left side. Bruins late goals came from Showers and Underwood to give them two each for the game. Cornish and Todd each had two assists to go with their goals. Jason Cochrane had a strong two-way game. His short-handed goal was a beauty and he worked hard all game in the corners and along the boards. Cooper faced 31 shots in the MoJack net. Reid and Harnden saw 28 pucks fired their way. ModJacks gave up three power play goals. SLAPSHOTS: MoJack head coach Ken Harman was disappointed in Sunday's loss calling it a "tough one." He said the MoJacks were flat in the first half of the game (like Friday night) but picked things up in the third period. He had words of praise for the work of Kennedy in the two weekend games and said he'll 'get the start in goal when the series resumes in Uxbridge of Tuesday (Feb. 9) night. But Harman said he is not happy with the lack of goals on the powei play and suggested he may make changes to set up screens. "We need somebody - crowding the net," he said. Other than that, he'll go with ~ the same game plan to try to shut down the Bruin shooters like Winn, Underwood and Hudgins. Game four is back in Port Perry on Thursday, Feb. 11 at 8:30. This series is turning into a real "take no prisoners" affair, typicial playoff hockey. Meanwhile, Little Britain Merchants are up three games to none over Bobcaygeon and had a chance tq end it Monday night as the teams met in Bobcaygeon. If Merchants take the series as expected, they likely will opt for the second round bye, said general manager Art Field. In the other series, Lakefield Chiefs bounced back Sunday night with a 4-2 win over Bowmanville. Eagles lead in that one is now two games to one. Should the MoJack-Bruin series continue, game six is Friday night in Uxbridge at 8:30 PM and game seven would be back in Port Perry, Sunday (Feb. 14) at 7:30 PM. The Curling Challenge Is coming up February15 at the Blackstock Arena as teams from Port Perry and Blackstock vie for the coveted Golden Slider award.
