The Port Midgets are in quest of a third straight all-Ontario title at the BB level. Saturday night on home ice, the Port guys went to work quickly and the match was pretty well settled before the end of the first period, Duane Empringham staked the team to a 1-0 lead on the power play with the match less than four minutes old. Ryan Ridgway upped it to 2-0 also on the power play as he found the corner with a low shot from the face-off circle. And before the first period was over, Steve Desautels found himself all alone in front of Milton goalie Jeff Curgie and he made no mistake at all to give Port the commanding three-goal lead. Milton managed to get one past Port netminder Mike Tripp as Paul MacDonald found the range early in the second, but Darryl Bourgeois and Desautels with his second of the match pushed the score to 5-1. Jason Phillips rounded out the scoring early in the third period. Brad McArthur set up three of the Port goals in this one, and Ridgway had two assists to go with his goal. In game one in Milton, the Port team used the third period to break open a closer contest as Jeremy Norton fired the "natural" hat trick in the final stanza. Chad Kearns clicked for a pair in the second period and opening frame goals came from the sticks of Sean McEnaney and Simon Trainor. McEnaney had two assists and Jason Phillips had three as Port Perry had things pretty much their own way in the second half of the game. A lot of Port Perry fans are wondering why Milton with a population of 31,000 is playing at the BB level. The team was "bumped down" to the BB level after losing half a dozen players to the Regional AAA Midget squad in that area. Game three is this Saturday evening in Milton at 7:15 and a win there will set the stage for a Port sweep when the series resumes at the Scugog Arena on Monday Feb. 15 at 9:15. The winner of this series will take on the winner of the Midland-Collingwood 1/4 final. Atoms work to stay sharp Port Perry's Atom 'A' hockey team has been in a holding pattern since league play ended iny mid January. The playoff format for 'BB' teams had Port getting a bye in the first round waiting for the winner of a Collingwood Vs. Midland series. In the meantime the Atom's have been playing exhibition games trying to stay sharp for their start in the playoffs sometime in mid February and for their home tournament on February 20. In the five exhibition games the boys have wins against Whitby [6-2] and Ajax [4-2]. In both of these games Port didn't have too much of a problem scoring goals and controlling the play, but in a home and series against Stouffville on the weekend the "Atom's dropped both games 3-1 and 4-1. Brad Johnston and Ryan McQuade were the only ones to find the twine in these matches. Jeff Ashton had 2 assists with Brad and Greg Bruton each picking up one. Against Whitby the goal scorers were Ryan with the hat trick, Braden Tarbotton (2), and Nick Pelck. Assists went to Brett Clouthier (3), Chad Lance (2), Nick, Jeff, Ryan, Brad, Murphy Irvine, and Aaron Chambers all had one. In the Ajax game Brett held the hot hand getting two goals and an assist, Brad had a goal and a helper and Nick got the other goal. Assists also went to Greg (2), Ryan, Chad and Mark Blakley. In their only other game the boys ended up on the short side of the score board losing to Lindsay 4-2. Brad got both goals in this one with Chad and Jeff each picking up an assist. Hopefully the playoffs will begin this coming weekend and the boys can get down to playing some serious hockey. : PERSONAL TOUCH Floral & Gift Shop 209 MARY ST, (across from LCBO) PORT PERRY 985-9360 We are offering Roses at the Lowest Prices in 10 Years!
