my Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, February 16, 1993-- 11 Crandell's comedy heats up the night Nothing like some biting humour to warm up a chilly winter's night in the middle of February. Three very funny guys did just that last Friday evening in front of a full house at Crandell's Riverboat Restaurant in Port Perry. Rick Petta, Craig McLaughlin and Barry Kennedy also known as the Comedians Rick Petta, Barry Kennedy (at left) and Craig McLaughlin (right) with Crandell's Riverboat owners, B.J. and Rick Short after the comedy show on Friday evening, that played to a full house. See story. Puppy may have come in contact with rabid skunk Officials with the Health of Animals department want to contact a woman from the Port Perry area who obtained a part-Husky puppy from a Washburn Island man on February 1. The puppy may have come in contact with a skunk that tested positive for rabies. Dr. David Campbell, a veterinarian with the federal Health of Animals branch in Peterborough said last week School opens In Uxbridge The Uxbridge Montessori - School has opened its doors offering classes and an environment designed for child development through exploration. The Montessori School is located in the former Ministry of Agriculture building on Street and is owned by Roschelle Tennakoon, a certified Montessori teacher. She has been a teacher for the last six years. The school offers programs for children from two and a half to seven years of age. Exercises of practical life help children to gain control and co- ordination of movement, take care of themselves, each other and their environment, leading them to independence, explains Mrs, Tennakoon. There is a strong emphasis on activities in language and mathematics and cultural subjects such as history, geography, biology, science, art, music, French, and physical eflucation. For info. call 852-6377. they have no concrete proof of contact between the skunk and the puppy. "We don't want to take any chances. Puppies are very susceptible to rabies and it is a serious disease," he said. Four puppies from the same litter were "put down" last Thursday as a precautionary measure, he said. Dr. Campbell said a skunk was shot on Washburn Island February 1 and tests proved it to be rabid. The skunk was shot in the immediate area where the litter of puppies was being kept and there is a chance it may have had some contact with the puppies, he said. The owner of the litter does not know the name of the woman who took one of the puppies, but officials believe she lives in the Port Perry area. Dr. Campbell said if the puppy did come in contact with the skunk, it may not be showing any outward signs of rabies, or may not have contracted the virus. He said there have been three confirmed cases of rabid skunks on Washburn Island since late last fall. Dr. Campbell said the woman or anybody who knows where this puppy is now should contact Health of Animals in Peterborough at 705-742-5098. "Prime Minister of Comedy," had them chuckling through the entire show with some off- the-wall gags and some (reasonably) good natured exchanges with a few people in the audience. Kennedy, who is well known in the country for his humour touched on a whole range of Canadian topics, everything from bilingualism, drinking habits, accents (French Canadian and Scottish), to vegetarians and health foods. He was funny without being offensive and the audience seemed to be enjoying every gag. Rick Petta served as MC for this "Night of Comedy," and cashed in on his Italian heritage with some very funny jokes about his days spent working construction with his uncle and his cousins.. Craig McLaughlin, who told the audience he's from Wiarton, spiced his routine up with plenty of four-letter words. The new smoking regulations, male and female strippers, feminine hygiene products and even the police gun rules came under this barbs. "The Rae government wants to take the police guns away and give them a bit of red pepper. What next, some salt, paprika and a dash of parsley?"- Crandell"s proprietor BJ Short said she was delighted with the audience apd the comedy. And she said if last Friday evening is any indication of how Port Perry reacts to professional comedy, Crandell's will be holding another Comedy Night in the not-too- distant future. All three comedians said tHby enjoyed the crowd and indicated they would be glad to make a return appearance.
