> Scugos Citizen -- -- Tuesday, Kebruary 16, 1983-- 19 9 4& --CITIZEN SPORTS) MoJack goalie had something to prove When Roy Kennedy was released by Markham earlier this season, he felt he had something to prove. The 17-year old Whitby native proved he is a superb puck-stopper as the Port Perry MoJacks eliminated the Uxbridge Bruins four games to one in the opening round the Central Junior C playoffs. Kennedy was in the cage for four of those games and came up with three victories, including last Thursday night's 8-6 clincher at the Scugog Arena. "I felt I had something to prove to Markham," he said following the victory last Thursday night. "I don't mind the (playoff) pressure. I like it," he said, adding words of praise for the way the MoJacks played in front of him, especially in the latter stages of the series clincher. Asked about the up-coming series and whether he would prefer to face one team or another, he shrugged and said "it's not going to be easy from * here on in, but my job is stop pucks." MoJack head coach Ken Harman said after the Uxbridge series that goaltending was the difference. He said Kennedy's performance between the pipes was as good as you'll see in this league. And Harman, who stopped pucks himself for the - MoJacks for four seasons, knows a thing or two about netminders. As for who will get the start in goal for the MoJacks in the next round, Harman said Thursday he had not made up _ his mind. But with two superb goalies in Kennedy and Ian Cooper (a Junior C All Star) Harman finds himself in an enviable spot. Last Thursday's series clincher at the Scugog Arena kept MoJack fans on the edge of their seats til almost the final buzzer, By the middle of the second period, MoJacks had opened a 5-0 lead on a pair of goals by Greg Davidson and singles from Steve Laird, Jim Vernon and Keith Leslie. But the Bruins still had a heart beat ticking somewhere and rallied to cut the margin to 5-3 heading into the final period. Ryan Coburn and Steve Dick scored within 15 seconds of each other and Curtis Hudgins netted one with just 37 seconds left in the period. The third period was a see- saw affair with both te getting the momentum and. then losing it. Jody Logan got two for the MoJacks, one off a great set-up by Vernon and the other on a clear breakaway after he blocked a clearing pass at the Bruin line. The Bruins Steve Dick potted two of his,own to get the hat trick and make the score 7-5 with five minutes left. But that was as close as the Bruins could get. With seconds left in the match, Jarrett Harman settled things once and for all with an empty netter. GAME FOUR: K there was a pivotal game in this series for both teams, this was it. The series moved west to the Uxbridge Arena February 9 and the Bruins had momentum after their OT victory two nights earlier in Port Perry that left the series two games to one in favour of the MoJacks. As they have done so often this year, MoJackse found a way to win. This time they did it with a late goal by Jody Logan that snapped a 3-3 tie. With less than four minutes in the game, he took a pass from Shannon Todd in the the face- off circle and snapped a low wrist shot that beat Bruin netminder Brian Harnden cleanly on the glove side. Logan's goal proved to be the game winner, but it was goalie Roy Kennedy who broke the backs and hearts of the Bruins time after time. In a word, Kennedy was brilliant, especially in the first period as the Bruins swarmed around the MoJack zone. He faced 17 shots and stopped them all. Once while the MoJacks were on the power play, Bruins had two clear cut chances in a row and Kennedy Bantam H.L. LG.A. playing in front of the stellar goaltending of John Babcock defeated Frank Real Estate by a score of 3-1 on Sat. Feb. 13. The first petiod of this game featured good skating and passing by both teams and some outstanding saves by Ian Johnson in the Frank net. Frank opened the scoring late in the period on a goal by Kent Jamieson. The score stayed that way until late in the second when Rick Olaisen scored on a beautiful end-to- end rush. Assists on this goal went to Don McKay and Matt Grills. I.G.A. made it 2-1 two minuteslater with Don McKay scoring in a goal 'mouth scramble. Assists went to Sean Gawley and Matt Grills. LG.A. scored an insurance marker late in the period as Matt Brown tucked in a Rick Olaisen pass. Matt Grills picked up his third assist of the day on this goal. Action continues next week in Bantam League play. came up with a pair of saves as good as you'll see anywhere. At the other end, MoJacks could muster just seven pucks in Brian Harnden's direction. But they scored on nearly half of them to steal a 3-0 lead after 20. minutes. Jeff Barr on a pass from Jan alked right through ruin defense, put on a e deke and snapped a shot from 20 feet out. At 11:12, Jim Vernon made it 2-0, tipping home a puck at the side of the crease with help from linemates Logan and Todd. And Keith Leslie scored his first of the playoffs at 16:52 while killing a penalty. He snagged a loose puck in the centre zone, skated in alone and buried one behind Harnden. ModJacks picked up their play in the second. period, but it was the Bruins who did all the scoring. Steve Brown cashed in a rebound at the mid-point to make it 3-1. Three minutes later, Steve. Dick deflected a shot past Kennedy and at 18:43 Aaron Morrison got one off a scramble to knot the game at threes. The three Bruin goals in this period came off the power play. Kennedy continued to perform heroics through the third period, keeping the MoJacks in the game with numerous big stops until Logan popped the winner at 16:11. Kennedy did more than stop pucks in this one. Midway through the third period he was called for a five minute slashing penalty after delivering a solid whack with the stick on the back-side of Bruin captain Chris Winn. That penalty was partially wiped out three minutes later when Bruins Jason Underwood speared Jason Cochrane. The linesman eventually called a penalty and Underwood was gone for four minutes. Speaking of Cochrane, he had another strong game and has become one of the best two-way players in the MoJack lineup. SLAPSHOTS: MoJacks can use a few days rest as several players are hurting. Clair Cornish banged up a knee, Jason Cochrane has a dis- located thumb and captain Brett Puckrin is hampered by chronic shoulder problems. But all three will play in the next series against the Bowmanville Eagles knocked off Lakefield Sunday night 8-2 to win the series in seven Game one in the ModJack- Eagle tilt is tonight (Feb. 16) in Bowmanville at 8:30 PM with game two back in Port on Thursday night at 8:30.
