Local cadet to compete in national biathalon Cadet Warrant Officer John Cole has earned himself a trip to the Armed Forces Base at Val Cartier, north of Quebec City. W.0. Cole will be competing for the Ontario team in the national Cadet Biathlon championship against about 60 other cadets from all over Canada. He earned the right to be part of the team in Val Cartier after finishing 4th in the Ontario finals held recently at the Canadian Forces Base Pettawawa. He and the other competitors got a real taste of Canadian winter as the mercury hovered in the minus 30 range. The biathlon is a very popular sport in several European countries that combines cross country skiing and target shooting. It's a gruelling sport that demands top physical condition from the competitors. W.0. Cole will be competing in the individual 7.5 km event and the four man relay with each covering five km. The shooting will be done with a 22 cal. single shot Anschutz rifle. The 17-year old has been competing in biathlons for three years, but this year is the first time he has won at the provincial level and earned a spot on the national team. He's looking forward to the competitions that will run from Feb. 20-28. The competitors take it very seriously, he said with a smile last week, to the point where you have to watch that your gun sights are not tampered with or the wrong kind of wax finds its way onto your skis. The skiing technique is no longer traditional cross country, but what is known as "skate-#Kiing" which allows more speed over the course. W.O0. Cole has been a member of the #41 Port Perry Army Cadet Corps for the last five years. Blackstock curling action The score of ten to three tells the tale. Merlin Suggitt let Gerald Kelly win the first and the eighth end but took all the rest. Gerald did not get any breaks and looked just a little bit disgusted when it was all over. Merlin's team liked the draw weight and fared well when called upon to lay one in the house. On the other two sheets the battles were a little more equal. Peter Luckhardt kept battling back but Cam Porter took five of the eight ends and the result was six to five for Cam. It looks like a tight race for the second half of the year. The Fletcher spiel was won by Dave Aldred's team with wife Lori vicing, Rob Graham and Paul McIntyre. Everybody seems to have had a great time 15 WATER ST., at this annual event. By the time you read this the curling challenge will have taken place. You'll get a full report on the results next.week but in advance, thanks to everybody for their support of this fun event. Here's how you can become a more effective communicator: * be an attentive listener; when a players Is talking, be quiet, maintain eye contact, and demonstrate you are listening by paraphrasing of re- stating what the player says. * when addressing your team, speak clearly, face the players and make frequent eye contact. * take nor more than two minutes to explain and demonstrate a skill during practice. « / * after games and practices, gather your players together to invite feedback on what they felt was positive, what they did well, what they learned, what they enjoyed and any suggetions. * be aware of the messages that non-verbal cues like facial expressions and body movements sent to your players.
