my Beugog Citizen -- Tuesday, February 23, 1993-- 11 +4 Scouts raising money for Europe trip by Heather McCrae When the boys of the first Port Perry Scouts got together last fall to begin another scouting year consideration was given to a hiking and camping trip. The idea of attending the Boy Scout Jamboree this summer in the Kananaskas Region in Alberta was soon cancelled out as the costs incurred would be too high. But, a trip overseas proved to be less expensive. The Scouts of the 1st Port Perry Scouts have been building a hot dog cart and hope to have It in operation In early March. In the window are Bob Brown (left) and Cameron Flieler, Standing are (from left) Jett Morden and Dave Novak. See story. The scouts came up with the plan of hiking in the mountains of Germany. But because of the political unrest in that country lately their plans have been altered somewhat and the focus is now on Kandersteg, Switzerland. The Big International Scout Camp is located there, of which Canada owns one of the large pavilions. Larry Emmerson, their Troop Scouter, has been to Kandersteg twice before, once while on his honeymoon. Larry says the mountainous countryside is beautiful and the camp is located near the southern border so theyll have the possibility of day trips into Italy and Germany. And he's pleased the scouts will be experiencing "a different culture and ". The scouts and their leaders will be camping out their entire stay in the Swiss countryside. Everything they need, from a toothbrush, sleeping bag, cooking utensils and clothing will be packed in their backpack. There are 20 young men in the 1st Port Perry Scouts and four leaders. Along with Larry are patrol councilors Greg Sanders, Gerrit Versluys and Jay Geekie. As always, when planning a trip, money is a major factor. The scouts have been doing a lot of fundraising projects to subsidize the cost of air fare, food and whatever essentials they'll need. They delivered Blue Box calendars for the Township and took orders for frozen food for Perfect Portions in December. But their major fundraiser is being worked on currently. It's a hotdog cart which they have been building since last fall. Elgin Knopp donated an old snowmobile trailer which has been stripped down, welded and strengthened. Scugog Lumber helped them out by giving them a discount on the lumber needed. And Mre. Noelle Ramey has been kind enough to let the scouts use the former Dennis Anderson building for the construction of this new project. 'The Dog House', about the size of a large ice hut, is presently 90% complete, just needing a few more nails here and there and a good coat of paint in the scouts' colours of red and blue. The scouts are planning on using The Dog House all year round, selling hot dogs (of course), hot chocolate, coffee and pop. It will be equipped with a gas barbeque, running water, a gas stove and coolers. A 12-volt system has been installed for ventilation. On ice or land, you'll see the scouts throughout the Port Perry area. But Larry stresses the scouts will not be selling anywhere near where there already is an existing local 'eatery'. Their motive is to provide food and drinks at areas where there are few such demands. Coming to mind, one area is the ball diamond located by the legion. To fatten their bank account further the scouts are available to deliver catalogues and flyers from businesses on a 'door to door' delivery. Catering the Canoe the Nonquon banquet is also on their agenda for early June. : In an interview with the Citizen last week, Larry said he and Greg are the only two leaders intending on accompanying the scouts to date. But he stressed they would like one leader for every five scouts, so more leaders are needed. Canada's National Catalogue OEARS Catalogue We're still here for you!
