wp $6-- Scugog Citizen -- Tu y , February 23, 1993 = Milton ends Port Bantam season Milton was the scene for the first playoff game for the Port Perry Country Style Bantam #1's. As both teams skated out on the ice, you could see this Id be an exciting series as both teams were very evenly matched. Craig Laird led off the scoring with his 1st of 3 goals for the night at the half way mark of the 1st period, assisted by wingman Darryl Bourgeois, but Milton added one to tie the first period. The second period saw Milton net 2 more goals and Port's very powerful Jay King answered back with one assisted by Ian Shrigley. As the 3rd period opened, Milton took a commanding 4-2 lead but Port Perry never gave up with Milton in the penalty box, Craig closed the gap assisted by Jeremy Geer and Ian MacCready assisting. Less than 1 minute later on another powerplay Jeremy tied the score assisted by Craig and Ian ending regulation time 4-4. This score set the stage for a 10 minute overtime period. Both teams had lots of chances but couldn't seem to beat the netminders. Brian Bickmore stood tall between the pipes for Port continually frustrating the Milton offence. With 1:35 remaining Milton jumped into the lead on a powerplay goal but with 21 seconds left before the final whistle Craig tied it up on a scramble in front of the net assisted by Ian Shrigley. Game 1 ended 1 point each. Game 2 was in front of the home town fans. The Bantam #1 team hit the ice at full speed. After a rousing pep talk from coach Wilbur, Port once again opened up the scoring early in the 1st period with Kenton Lefort doing the damage assisted by a really hard waking Craig Laird. Port took a 3-0 lead before the middle of the 2nd period with captain Craig Laird both goals this time assisted by Jefemy and Tom Chambers .Nice work boys Unfortunately Milton struggled back to once again tie the game. The boys found themselves in a very familiar spot again as the 10 minutes was put up for the overtime period. Both teams played exceptionally fast paced hockey but with only 30 seconds remaining Milton capitalized winning the game 4-3. Scott Pretchitko was guarding Port's net that night and was amazing as he faced a lot of rubber. After the coin toss, Game 3 went back to Milton Saturday night. With the absence of wingman Kevin Hobb who is out with back problems, Jason Logan who is also missing from the line up, with a knee injury, Jay King who was sitting a game misconduct, the Bantam squad welcomed Rob Murphy and Darryl McEneney to the line up. Both boys fit right in and were a welcome addition to the team. The opening period saw Milton light up the board first but Ian Shrigley answered back with his 1st of 3 assisted by Craig and Jeremy. The 2nd period saw both teams notch 1 as Ian worked together with Jeremy and Tim Fitzpatrick Port took the lead in the 3rd as Ian completed his hat trick this time assisted by Craig and Kenton. Milton was able to sneak 3 more in to win the game 5-3. With coach Wilbur back behind the bench in Game 4, the Country Style boys were raring to go once again. Jon Jamieson was in the line up and played a great game. Port opened the scoring on a lone effort by the fast moving, hard hitting Darryl Bourgeois. Milton tied the score but with 1 second remaining, Ian Shrigley gave Port the lead assisted by Kenton Lefort and Bill Zaparanuik. Port Perry was forced to play catch up in the 3rd and they did as Craig Laird teamed up with Jay King to make it look easy ending the 2nd 3-3. Then as the closing minutes of the 3rd period came around, Milton took the lead and ended the game 4-3. This game as in all the others have been outstanding with either team being lucky enough to come out on top. Game 5 was a do or die situation for the boys of the Port Perry Bantam "A" squad. Jay King started the scoring off early taking a nice pass from lan MacCready, blashing up the right side and putting it home. Nearing the end of the 1st period, Bill Z. was assessed a 5 minute major and a game for fighting which meant Tim Fitzpatrick Jay Peak - Vermont SNO BOWL CHALETS Tow NIT SES pai Groupe Up 10.30 wo Welcome. 5 "on Ask about hal price skiing offer after March 22nd. for reservations & information please call toll-free gE ={ololhc hc} Flo log ke) [oT oll Bt 2 To p= J 2 Brahe 724 | Mention You Saw Our Ad In the Scugog Citizen and Receive a 10% Discount. - dropped back and played a very strong game on defence. During the 2nd period, Milton managed to grab a 4-1 lead but coming into the 3rd period a very determined Port team was on fire scoring first at the 7:16 mark. Darryl was credited for the goal with Craig and lan getting the assists. Less than 2 minutes later Ian came on the ice to pick up a pass from Jeremy and he knew just what to do with it putting on a bit of magic and beating the Milton netminder. With the score now 4-3, Darryl once again displaying some skillful hockey moves, tied the game 4-4 with Tim Fitzpatrick assisting. The game then went into the 10 minute overtime to decide a winner. Milton jumped into a 5-4 lead but it wasn't over yet as the awesome duo of Ian and Jay barrelled through the Milton team once again tying the score. As with earlier games, Milton scored a heartbreaking goal with only 19 seconds left into an empty Port net. Brian Bickmore and Scott Pretchitko shared sibiliti between the pipes and the boys both throughout the series displayed some of the best goaltending ever. Nice work guys. This ends the season for the Bantam #1 team but the coaches and boys should be very proud of themselves as they played an outstanding series. All the team mates gave 100% and gave the parents and fans many hours of enjoyment. Congratulations on a very successful season. Thank-you Country Style Donuts for your continued support and the generous donation of juice for the boys after each game. Thanks to the coaching staff of Todd, Steve, and John and also Carol and Hillis for your tireless effort and support. No luck for Guardian Tweens Port Perry Guardian Drugs Tween A team participated in the Oshawa Ringette Association's 25th anniversary tournament on February 19 and 20. Their first game against Nepean got off to a bad start. Janine had sprained her ankle and was on crutches ... a real handicap for the team, and Dana was battling a flu bug. Nepean had major energy and with only 8 skaters Port just couldn't seem to rally enough to come back from a 4-2 score. Cara scored the first goal after a great pick up on a pass from Shona Janna set Heather up for the second goal. Heather scored again, so we all thought, but the refs didn't see it the same way, Port was fired up for game 2 against Oshawa. Bob fed Cara and Shona something remarkable for lunch - they were a scored 3 goals and assisted one The third game was against Port's rival from Sudbury who had beat them in the championship game in North Bay. Sudbury were flying and got 2 quick goals. Shona retaliated after receiving a beauty pass from Janna to light up the scoreboard. Trailing 3-1 at the end of the first period, coach Senyk rallied the girls confidence and within a couple of minutes Heather scored twice on shots along the ice. Natasha, Laura and Brooke assisted these goals. Bonni-Jo had enough abuse at her defensive end, and determined to score, took off for the net. Heather and Shona set her up nicely. Dana strengthened the lead with a beatiful goal helped by Laura. Jana, Natasha Shona came out flying and got the first 2 goals assisted by Heather, Cara and Janna. Repeatedly 2 and 3 girls from both teams were in the penalty box at the same time. Knowing they had to win or tie to have a chance at the champion- ship, they dug in - Laura found a high corner on a pass from Heather & Janna, then Heather scored quickly from Shona & Cara. With 2 seconds left in the game, Port was awarded a penalty shot. Shona was the coaches choice to take this shot and W-O-W - what a deke to tie the game 5-5. congratulations to Shona who and Bonni d up the defensive zone while the offense shot time after time on the net. Sudbury tied it up 5-5. With minutes left both teams braced for the confrontation ahead. Shona, Cara and Brooke quickly put #6 up. With 23 seconds left Shona was awarded another penalty shot. This time her attempt was stumped by the skilled Sudbury goalie. With adrenalin running high, Natasha was ready for the Sudbury rush down the ice toward our goalie in the last few seconds. What a check Natasha! Their last effort was foiled for Port to win 6-56. This was definitely Dana's best game of the tournament. With relatives galore to applaud, she started off her hat trick with a high shot unassisted. Laura, Bonni Jo and Heather clicked to set Dana's next two goals up. Although Whitby skated hard, the defense of Natasha, Bonni-Jo and Janna were outstanding once again and held them to a 3-2 victory. Congratulations Dana on all three goals. This game was undoubtedly Katie's best game of the weekend in-between posts. The Guardian Drug squad is extremely fortunate to have such a talented and dedicated goalie. Special mention to Jana for assisting on 4 goals from defense this tournament. After winning this game Port was one of a 3 team tied for first place. The destiny of 2 teams which would advance to the finals relied on the result of an Oshawa/Nepean game. Port would advance unless this game tied...and wouldn't yqu know it? They tied!!!
