What you may not know is that Kin clubs have been actively involved in worthy projects around the world for half a century. And the work goes on, mostly in countries in Africa, southeast Asia, South and Central America. Bob Elliott, executive director and Kin and Kinette Clubs of Canada outlined several international projects supported by dollars raised by clubs across this country. He was speaking last Wednesday evening to present and former members of the Port Perry Club as they enjoyed "past presidents and honourary members night." Kin dollars have built polio clinics in Africa, health and nutrition clinics in the Philippines, medical, educational and even "toy" libraries in India, schools for the mentally handi d involving small loans (as little as $200) for family businesses. He said 95 per cent of the loans were re-paid. And the loans were often made to the female head of the family because they would use the money wisely for the benefit of the entire family and are more inclined to re-pay. The most ambitious single project overseas started about ten years ago to bring medical relief to the starving in Ethiopia, Mr. Elliott said. "Our efforts helped to make life bearable for a lot of people, and people lived because of our presence," he told the meeting. (see photo) Durham couple facing 2 charges Durham Police have charged two Oshawa residents with conspiracy to commit murder and counselling to commit an indictable offense. Police said the charges were laid February 19 after a man approached police alleging he had been asked to ambush a victim on his way to work. After a two day investigation into the allegations, police charged 63-year old Edwin Cooper Down and 39-year old Mary Linda Hettle-Down. Both are of Wilson Road North, Oshawa and they made an initial appearance in provincial court on Monday.
