wp" 14-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 2, 1993 3 Don't cut our social programs now LETTER To THE EDITOR To The Editor: Everyday we hear more news about plants closing and working people losing their jobs. Many are older workers who made a decent living in the manufacturing sector, who have families to support and who won't be able to find comparable paying jobs without new skills or training. We also have a federal government that has done little for the working people of this country, this province and this community. In fact, we now have a government talking tough about the one thing that will help many of these working people during tough times - unemployment insurance. Rather than taking a leadership role by preserving * All at Guaranteed Low Prices! and creating jobs, the federal government seems to actually believe Canadians would rather quit their jobs and collect UI than have a decent job to go to each day and dne in which to take pride. Most people hope never to go on Ul but it is their insurance - something that they have paid into - especially workers who have seen in the job market for many years. These workers real world and the needs of working people. It has little regard for the economic and more importantly, human consequences of its changes to the unemployment insurance system. What will happen to the woman who is sexually harassed at work? Qr the employee who finds unsafe working conditions and other employees willing to put up with them? Or the middle-aged worker who accepts a voluntary buyout to make room for a younger employee? This is the second time the federal government has significantly changed the unemployment insurance system since 1988. It is obvious that the Tories are leading us towards the American system where only one-third of the unemployed are entitled to benefits. Have we not seen enough heartache in the last few years? Have we not seen enough jobs disappear permanently, many of them south of the border? Have we not had enough of an unfeeling, uncaring federal government that has caused much of this heartache through its policies? And is it not time that we started to address some of the roots of these problems rather than cutting our social programs during difficult times? Sincerely, Lucy Rybka-Becker (Lucy Rybka-Becker is the NDP candidate in the Federal riding of Durham.) expect a certain return if ever unemployed and are now finding their UI benefits are continually being reduced. The federal government's changes mean that after April 1, benefits will be lowered from 60 to 657% of insurable earnings. The federal government is obviously out of touch with the UNITED lat ala] & A Largest Carpet Selection In Scugog Township and a member of the largest carpet buying group in Canada. FAMOUS Levolor. & BLINDS VERTICALS * VENETIANS PLEATED SHADES Corn tests OK for feed Despite delayed maturity and a tough harvest, 1992 Ontario corn is a good and economical source of nutrients to feed livestock and poultry, researchers have found. Recent studies have shown that while high grade corn is in short supply, good quality feed corn is plentiful. Laboratory tests on 1992, co- ordinated by the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture, show that the overall nutritive value of grade four and five corn is similar to higher grades. Bushel weight is not an indicator of nutrient levels this HOMESTEAD by Ballard & Carnegie . HWY. 7A EAST - PORT PERRY 985-2451 or 985-2157 WOODTECH CUSTOM CABINETS made in Port Perry or our Shop. The nutrient study used 90 samples collected from commercial elevators across the province with harvest moisture levels ranging from 25 to 60 per cent. Bushel weights varied between 37 and 58 pounds. The corn averaged 3160 kcal/kg of poultry metabolizable energy, just five per cent below accepted standard energy levels. Starch levels were considerably lower, averaging 67 per cent, rather than the 67 per cent. of the previous year. This reflects the immaturity at harvest and the lower quality corn this year. Sugar levels were at the same or slightly below expected levels, as were protein levels, although protein levels varied sharply in different areas of the province. The ultimate test of corn nutrient is animal or poultry performante. Feeding trials at Ridgetown College and University of Guelph support the lab findings. Energy levels are at least equal to last year and feed grain ratios are equal to or improved for 1992 corn when compared to the crop harvested in 1991. OMAF is continuing to conduct research into the' quality and feed value of the 1992 Ontario corn crop.
