wp" 20-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 2, 1993 Community Care helps with income tax returns | Trained Community Care Volunteers are preparing Income Tax Returns again this year. Each year, Revenue Canada Taxation sponsors a community-based program that provides free tax assistance to people who have difficulty completing their tax returns. The program is designed to respond to the needs of disadvantaged Canadians, especially the elderly, the disabled, new immigrants and people who have low incomes Our objective is to help people who canpot afford the services of tax consultants and who are incapable of completing their tax returns without assistance. Since its inception over a decade ago, the Volunteer Program People from diverse professions and backgrounds get together once a year, usually in February, to learn about or refresh their knowledge of Canada's income tax system in order to help' others. Revenue Canada employees organize these training sessions and- provide the volunteers with tax training and all the materials they will need to prepare a straightforward tax return The training reviews the best methods for completing a tax return; highlights any budget changes affecting tax filers; and provides on-going support to the volunteers once the initial training session os completed. As the program sponsor, Revenue Canada Taxation plays only a background role in the delivery of this service. The volunteers are its lifeblood. Through them the program responds to the needs of less fortunate Canadians in their ities. Some vol J make house calls, providing assistance to bed-ridden or hospitalized tax filers, other volunteers get together, in groups, usually through an association, and run "free tax clinics" for people with low incomes and other tax filers with special needs. Again this year volunteers from the Kinsmen Club and the community are helping Scugog Community Care provide this service, on March 13, 1993. She was born during the storm last week. Send your names to the Cltizen, 36 Water St., Port Perry LL 1J2. Pin a name on the baby donkey Remember that storm a week or so ago that almost brought this area toa halt for the day? Remember the road crews labouring away, plowing our roads round the clock from one end of the Township to the other? There was another kind of labour going on that day, a labour of love in an old barn near Manchester. Helen, a donkey, was in labour that cold, snowy, callous day. And all her efforts were rewarded with the birth of a little baby amidst the curious stares of the cattle that surrounded her pen. Helen is six years old and had just given birth to her first foal. Donkeys are becoming a more familiar site on farms and ranches these days as they help keep coyotes and wélves away from livestock. It was for this reason that Wesley Johnson of Manchester bought the jenny last fall. Her young foal born in the storm has not been named yet. Wes came up with the idea to ask readers of the Scugog Citizen to help give her a name. Wes and his niece will then select the one they like best. OK? Help Wes name that baby donkey. Send your favourite to the Citizen, 36 Water Street, Port Perry, LOL 1J2, or drop your entry off at our office. Don't forget to include your name, address and phone number. March 12 is the final day. The Citizen has come up with a nice prize for the person whose name is selected.
