wp" 34-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday , March 2, 1993 ya Eagles up 2 games on Merchants The Bowmanville Eagles have grabbed a 2-0 lead in games over the Little Britain Merchants in the Central Junior C championship series. Eagles nipped the Merchants 5-3 in the series opener Saturday evening in Little Britain, then held on for a 6-5 victory on home ice Sunday. Fresh from their impressive four-game sweep of the Port Perry MoJacks, the Eagles are . on a roll, playing disciplined hockey and making the most of their scoring chances. Merchants, who took the second round "bye" and sat idle for almost three weeks appear to have picked up a bit of rust in that time as their play was not as crisp and sharp as it usually is. In Sunday's game at the Bowmanville Arena, Merchants jumped into an early 1-0 lead as Gary Shaw popped one behind Drew Campbell at 4:45. But the Eagles Marv Robillard beat Brad Proulx at 9:32 and they took the lead at 14:12 as Shane Armstrong un- loaded the big slap shot from the face-off circle. Proulx got a trapper on the puck but it bounced into the cage. Jeff Budden took advantage of a Nick Dennis penalty early in the second to knot the game at deuces, but at 2:25 Robillard made it 3-2 Eagles and they stayed in the lead for good. The period ended 5-3 Eagles after goals by Ryan Stewart and Armstrong with his second of the game. Jeff Adams replied for the Merchants They went up 6-3 at 9:54 of the final when Dave Stockton scored from a fairly sharp angle and it looked like the Eagles were home free. But the Merchants must have heard a wake-up call as they took the play to the Eagles for the first time in the series and markers by captain Steve Trumbull and Jeff Adams cut the margin to 6-5. But that was as close as they could get. In Saturday's series opener, the Eagles got an early jump on the Merchants and it was enough for a 5-3 victory Brad Robinson had a pair for the winners with singles to Trevor Clapperton, Nick Dennis and Shane Armstrong For the Merchants, Mark Taylor, Sheldon Evers and Steve Trumbull did the The Labatts Mens Open Bonsplel at the Port Perry Curling Club was won by the rink of Garnet Warriner, Ron Parrish, Bill Tredway and Roy Carden. Pineridge on top after classic tilt with Crandelils After 24 league games it still came down to the final game to determine the playoff positions for the 8 teams in the SHL. Action this week set the stage for an exciting round of playoff games beginning next Sunday. With top honours on the line, the players did not disappoint the eager 8 a.m. spectators When the final buzzer sounded it was a 2-1 victory and league championship for the Pineridge Team. Congratulations to each team member and the Pineridge Sponsors. Also congrats to the Crandell's team for an exciting game right to the end. Goaltending by both Ray Gibson and Troy Grazier was superb. Phantom goals by Milton from Bourgeois and Todd Wilbur, and then Bourgeois from Bridge and Lee Steeves sealed the victory. The Gambler reply came from Dale Bronson on an unassisted effort. Game 2 saw another exciting affair as the Fitzgerald's Clippers came up against the Taylor Fuel Aces with goaltender Ken Harman of the Clippers looking for a great game and the League Goalie Award, for the second year in arow. An excellent end-to-end match ended with the Clipper's taking a well- deserved 3-1 victory and Harman grabbing the Netminder's Honour with a slim 1 goal advantage over Troy Glazier of the Phantoms. Congratulations to both players on an excellent season in the nets. Clipper goals came from Lee Wilbur, Ron Zaparanuik and Ken Smart. Despite a fine 5 point game, VanCamp was short 1 point of tying Bill Bridge. Congratulations to both players on excellent seasons in the scoring category! The J&D Hawks took this final game as well as second place honours with a 7-2 victory over the Harrison Blazers. Blazer goals came from John Katarba and Peter Lane with assists to Lane, "Doc" Thomson, and Suppelsa. The Hawk attack saw Bill VanCamp with a 5 assist performance.
