/ - 30-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday , March 2, 1993 CITIZEN SPORT SHORTS X1 Eaglettes The Port Perry XL Gas Bar Novice team kept up their busy schedule with an entry into the Oshawa Ringette Tournament. The Eaglettes first game was Friday morning at 8 a.m. in Orono with the opposition being the host Oshawa Novice squad. Using a silver medal placing in last week's Guelph tourney as a Springboard for this week's play, the team was ready for action And plenty of action there was as the XL'ers skated to a 10-2 win. Nicole Virtue set the tone for the game at 19 seconds with her first of four goals with the assists to Rhea Baxter and Sarah Verschurren. Two minutes later, Rhea connected on a setup from Sarah and Katherine Cooke. Nicole continued her scoring touch with the next 3 goals that listed as Nicole from Sarah, Nicole on a great pass from Jackie Pashley who's been playing just super, ° and Nicole from Sarah and Shannon Warriner Early in the second period with the score 5-2 and Oshawa trying to mount a comeback, Janna Ostafichuk came up with several key saves to stem the tide including a great right pad kickout that was labelled for the corner Sarah mgved up to centre and responded with a neat goal on her patented twirling and "catch me if you can" play with the assists to Nicole and Jill Pashley. The prettiest and almost textbook-like goal came at 2:49 on a super blueline to Rhea who instantly relayed to Alaina Burger who scored on a quick snap to the corner. Katherine took a shift at centre and she scored at 3:46 on some fine passing from Alaina Davis and Stacey Cunningham. The next goal was just the reversal with Alaina Davis using her favourite shot, the backhand flip to make it 9-2 with Stacey and Katherine assisting. Alaina Burger finished off the scoring with an unassisted marker at the 11:04 mark. Heather Reid continued her strong play and came close on a couple of shots The Eaglettes next game was at 3:00 in Newcastle against the London entry and the XL'ers had to work extra hard in this low scoring and tough checking affair. Identical to the first game, Port scored at 19 seconds with Stacey digging the ring loose and scoring on a great individual effort. Four minutes later at 4:30, Katherine scored on a good hard shot with the relays from Heather and Rhea It looked like Alaina Burger had regained her scoring touch with her third of the day on a nifty goal with Jackie and Stacey assisting. Rhea pocketed the Eaglettes fourth goal with the defensive pair of Janna and Nicole setting up the play. And speaking of defense, the tandem pairs of Sarah with Janna and Nicole with Alaina coupled with the strong goal of Jill, played a tight checking game and held London's sharpshooters to just one goal Jill made some great saves, especially one shot that she literally slapped out of the air and over the net. Shannon and Kristen both played a solid game and helped in the XL'ers 4-1 victory Game 3 was another carly morning contest against Pickering at Irquois Arena at 7:15 a.m. Despite the time and the cold conditions, the eaglettes, their sights set on reaching the finals, stuck to the game plan of skating, passing, and checking Coach Virtue juggled the lines to adjust to a less experienced Pickering squad and although the game wasn't as close as the 4-1 score would indicate, it was the names on the scoresheet that made the difference. As mentioned earlier, it was only a matter of time before some of the players would be rewarded for their hard work. First, it was Heather Reid who found the net on a solid shot with the setup from Stacey and Jackie > Sunday Buffets ... Val Payne blazed her way up the ice to-blast threg goals into the twine. Tanya T8Wns buzzed in two, as well &s Kim Poppleton who was playing on the offensive lines to give Amy Parliament a chance to give her battered knees a chance to recover. With this win Port Perry advances to the Provincials On Sunday, Feb 21, the Ivory Forest Belles played host to the Guelph Debs in a league playoff game. Unfortunately, only seven Guelph players made it to the game, forcing them to forfeit, but that didn't stop them from being on the winning side of a 6-3 score Guelph scored its first goal just five minutes into the game and led 2-0 before Kim Poppleton's hard work at the blue line enabled Jen Smith to weave her way through a couple of defenders and bulge the twine for Port's first goal. With the score 3-1 Guelph, Karen Kett made a nifty dish to Amy Parliament who cut in front of the Guelph net and slid the ring by a startled goaltender with 1:25 left in the first period As the second period started, Port Perry had acquired some momentum, and Amy Parliment tied the game on a crafty solo effort. Unfortunately, this was the last time the Port girls would see the scoreshect (besides under the Penalty column), as the Guelph goaltender slammed the door on the rest of our shots. The Guelph team put forth an excellent effort and deserved the 6-3 win. Port Perry Atoms Port Perry' s Atom A playoff hopes ended on Saturday when Collingwood defeated them 8-2. What had been a close game in which Port was looking good and carried most of the play, took a bad turn in the third period when the opposition scored five unanswered goals. After one period the Atoms were leading 2-1 and had already missed a chance to put the game out of reach by failing to capitalize on at least four excellent opportunities. Brad Johnston scored the opening goal with a great effort after stealing the puck and putting a couple of moves on their goalie. Chris Skerratt then scored Port's second goal on a nice low shot from in close with Mark Blakley getting the assist. Collingwood fought back and managed to lead 3-2 after two and it looked like Port was losing momentum. In the third the Green Machine got derailed as Collingwood used their speed and quick breaks to put the game out of reach. Collingwood defeated Port Perry 3-0 on Friday evening.
