ra 14-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday , March 9, 1993 ) Students part of Ont. Rugby team in U.K. Lindsay Parry by Heather McCrae Two young men from Port Perry have recently been selected to play on the Ontario Rugby Union Team and are scheduled to play on an overseas tour in the UK. Lindsay Parry, 17 and Al Foggetti, 18 both love the sport of rugby. The sport calls for a lot of physical stamina, yet you meet many interesting people too. Lindsay says, "in this sport you play against the opponents and after the game there generally is a lot of socializing with the opposition, unlike in many sports when there is opposition before, during and after the games." This is Lindsay's fourth year playing rugby. He is currently playing for three teams; the high school team since grade nine, the Oshawa Vikings, a rugby club, and the Ontario Rugby team As for Al, He's played for the Oshawa Vikings and the Ontario Rugby team for three years Like Lindsay, he's also played on the school team since grade nine, a total of five years. It was in 1990 when the Ontario Rugby Club asked Lindsay to play on the '15 and under' team. He played a couple of games, nothing major, he says. The next year he moved up a level. Both he and Al attended the Canadian Championships in Ottawa. The next year both young men played in the championships but at separate locales. Lindsay was playing on the 'under 17° team in Halifax while Al played on the 'under 19' team in Montreal. It was during these series of games that Al was voted as the MVP This year the championships are being held in Kamloops, B.C. in August during the Canada Games. And you can bet these two fine athletes will be playing their favoured sport The Ontario Rugby Union Team sends out scouts to various games throughout the playing season, witnessing the potential in players. These players are then asked to 'try out'. Then, if you make it, like these two men have, you're on the provincial team. Players from all over the province make up the Ontario Rugby Union team While on tour overseas the team will play in Pontypool, Wales and Newcastle, Summer programs approaching fast The Township's summer program is in full swing. New Programs have been added this year to meet the needs of special interests. The players will be up against some tough opposition, yet see a lot of the English countryside too and, of course socialize! Lindsay played on the high school rugby team last year when the team visited the UK. Not an awful lot has been done in the form of fund raising however the team members did sell first aid kits at the beginning of the year The Oshawa Viking Club has been very generous, pitching in $1,000. to help pay Lindsay's and Al's expenses While both men are overseas they will stay at the homes of the players of the opposing teams Lindsay plays the position of hooker in the middle of the for scrum while Al plays {ly-half They make up two of the fifteen players on the team Neither one 1s too worried about the loss of school work as they'll miss only four days Spring break occurs during the trp Lindsay and Al leave March 9 and arrive home on March 23 Nice work, fellas and good luck to you and the team BLOOD DONOR CLINIC 2:00 PM to 8:00 PM Wed., March 17th co-ordinated by Fidelity Lodge 428 at the MASONIC LODGE 320 QUEEN STREET, PORT PERRY For further information please contact Ralph Honey 985-2230, John Ross 985-2818 re The Cang i [o/R Reg Cross Sor Soce ty PVC PROFESSIONAL MORTGAGE BROKERS INC. 204 Casimir Street (af Perry St ) Port Perry Securing Your Best Interest Kenneth P.
