wp" 36-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 9, 1993 Eagles roll over Merchants in four For the first time since 1985 the Bowmanville Eagles have won the Central Ontario Junior C League championship. The Eagles did it in splendid fashion Sunday night in front of a boisterous home town crowd as they steam-rolled to an impressive 8-1 victory over the Little Britain Merchants to sweep the best of seven final in four straight games. Just 24 hours earlier, the Eagles nipped the Merchants 5-4 in overtime at the Little Britain Arena to put a hammer-lock on the series. In Sunday's game, Eagles Cornish girls in All Durham final The R.H. Cornish Intermediate Girls basketball team won itself a spot in the "Final Four" to determine the best squad in all of Durham Region. The girls are playing at Anderson Collegiate to-night (Tues. March 9) and will be giving it their best to come home with the "All Durham" championship banner The Intermediate earned the right to compete in the "Final Four" with a couple of well-played victories over tough opposition last week. In a "sudden death" playoff format March 2 at McLaughlin PS for the DEAA semi finals, the R. H. Cornish squad put together a fine effort in defeating Southwood PS 22-14 That put them into the finals team 17023 against first place Maple Ridge PS from Pickering and for the first half this was a real nail- biter, anybody's ball game With the score tied at the half, the R.H. Cornish team continued a balanced attack using two full lines and the strategy paid off nicely as they emerged victorious by a score of 26-18 Coaches Addison and Friede are more than pleased with the girls' play so far this season, especially the team work in working as a unit of five and all the individual hard work and dedication from the players. We wish them good luck in their quest to bring the Durham championship banner to Cornish School. Coaching Tips stormed out of the gate in the first period to build a 3-0 lead on goals by Brad Robinson, Trevor Clapperton and then Robinson again late in the frame. Clapperton's goal, a short-handed marker from a sharp angle more or less set the tone in this one. They upped it to 4-0 early in the second as Ryan Stewart found the corner from a sharp angle. Merchants tried valiantly to get back in the game as Mike Reid chipped one over the shoulder of Drew Campbell to make it 4-1, but that was as far as they could get. A pair of goals in ten seconds by Dave Stockton and captain Nick Dennis put this game and the series in the bag. Todd Canning and Jeff Murphy rounded out the scoring late in the middle period. In Saturday's game, the Merchants had a glorious chance to get back in the series. With the score tied 3-3 after regulation, Trevor Kent put them into a 4-3 in the straight ten OT period, but they couldn't hold it as Stockton got the equalizer and then Dave Real with the winner off a long shot from outside the blue line. Clapperton with two and Robillard with a single were the other marksmen. For the Merchants, Jeff Adams broke loose for three (two short- handed) Give the Eagles full marks for the series victory. They played with a huge amount of poise and discipline, kept the Merchants bottled up and more than made good on their scoring chances. They are certainly on a hot streak with ten consecutive playoff victories, but they will have to wait at least a week before moving on to the Ontario Junior C quarter final series against the winner of the Quinte League The series could open March 17 but that has yet to be confirmed Picton and Napanee are in the final with Picton winning game one over the powerful Napanee squad that suffered just one loss and one tie all season Cornish girls Intermediate Basketball team are In the All Durham Final Four Champlonships this week.
