wp" 30-- Scugog Citizen -- Tuesday, March 9, 1993 a= Manicre Houseleague Selects On Monday, Feb. 22, the Manvers Houseleague Selects travelled down the road to Omemee for their return engagement. Since their last game the Manvers Coaches have had their players going through some heavy duty drills in preparation for this game. It didn't take Manvers very long to turn the heat up in this game. It was just 13:22 when Danielle Hill took control of the ring at centre ice and put a nice pass over the Omemee blueline to Mandy Richmond who smoothed a nice pass over to Kelly Haijnik flying up the middle and with a good move, tucked it under the sliding goaltender to give Manvers the early lead 1-0. Just seconds later Kendra Clarke spotted Mandy Richmond in the clear at centre and fired a good pass over to her and when the Omemee defensemen turned to check mandy, she put a pass over to Michelle McCarthy flying into the Omemee zone. It was one on one, just Michelle and the goalie Michelle made a good move on the goalie but a nice skate save turned Michelle away empty handed. Omemee took control in their own zone and with some nice passing, moved into the Manvers zone. The Manvers goalie (Martin McCarthy) stopped two point blank shots and two poke checks later was down and the Smooth Omemee offence fired it upstairs to tie the game at 1-1. The defensive pair of Heidi Gray and Shannon Branton did some nice back-checking to try to stop the "patented Omemee Attack". The Manvers goalie was playing well, keeping her team in the CITIZEN SPORT SHORTS game making save after save. At 7:52, Omemee came into the Manvere zone and scored on a nice three way passing piay. At the 7:00 minute mark manvers had the ring in the Omemee zone when Marina Hawkshaw put a nice pass over to Jaime Laurie at the Omemee blueline, in the slot to Ashley Notenboom and the "Boomer" save. The rebound came out front to Marina who put it off the post and Ashley had one more poke at it but to no avail as the little Omemee goalie kept Manvers off the score board. Omemee scored on a breakaway at 6:20 to make it 2-1. Kendra Clarke took the ring up the right hand béards, over to Mandy Richmond who hit Michelle McCarthy in the slot and oh, she got robbed again. With 4:15 left on the clock, Omemee came flying down the ice with only Heidi Gray and Shannon Branton back. Shannon made a "spin and twirl" move to try and stop the attacker but they split the defense, and with a nice move, beat the Manvers goalie At the 3:20 mark, Crystal Hill put a beauty pass over to Kendra Clarke in the slot but once again the Omemee goalie sent Manvers away empty handed. With the score 4-1 for Omemee both teams were still playing at full tilt. The horn sounded to end the first period with both teams getting a standing "0" from the appreciative crowd. These two fine teams were really putting on quite a show Omemee outshot Manvers 23-9 in the first period with Martin McCarthy turning in a fine performance in net Jaime Laurie, and Kendra were doing a nice job of forechecking, plans to support the Water Rescue Equipment Fund. for every bottle* of purchased between February 3,1993 and March 29, 1993. is proud to be a part of your community. Omemee came out hard and fast trapping manvers in their own end, and 7.8,9,10 shots Martin stopped, but Omemee scoied on a nice "One Liner" from the slot to add to their lead. It was now 5-1. Kelly Haijnik stole the ring at centre, over to Mandy Richmond, into Marina Hawkshaw in the slot, back to Kendra Clarke at the point, but, the Omemee goalie was up to the task. Crystal Hill was forchecking well all game, especially along the boards, causing untimely turnovers. At 6:01 two girls from Omemee played cat and mouse with the Manvers goalie, and after four saves scored to to ahead 6-1 At the 3:00 minute mark Heidi Gray broke up a two on one to nullify the Omemee attack Omemee kept the pressure on with their smooth skating game. With 2:43 showing on tl.e clock, Omemee came storming into the Manvers zone and with a neat tic- tac-toe play fired it past the sprawling manvers goalie to increase the lead 7-1 Kelly Hajnik and Danielle Hill spear head a charge into the Omemee zone over to Kendra and the goalie made a nice save. The rebound came out front to Mandy and again the Omemee goalie stoned manvers. Omemee caught a Manvers clearing pass deep in the manvers zone and "scores" to make it 8-1, as the horn sounds to end the game. In goal for Manvers was Martin McCarthy. Honourable mention for good hustle goes to the Boomer" (Ashley Notenboom) and Shannon Branton Honourable mention for good defense effort to Crysta] Hill and Heidi Gray. It was a nice addition to the roster to have "Jaime Laurie", and "Martin McCarthy" with the "Selects". Nice going kids. Techstar Season Over The Techstar Bantam "B's" lost their battle in the All-Ontario semi-finals to Lindsay this weekend. The team played great hockey throughout this series, but in each game they lost by a one goal difference. On Wednesday night we travelled to Lindsay and the Port fans thought we were in for a real treat when Kevin Gray scored after only 12 seconds into the game. The piaymaker on this goal was Darryl Moase. However, that was our only goal of the game and despite a strong effort from the whole team, we just couldn't get past the Lindsay goaltender. Lindsay scored goals in the second and third period. Port's goaltender Jamie Trick played an awesome game, but couldn't keep Lindsay totally off the scoreboard. On Saturday the home crowd was treated another nail biter Port ended up on the loosing end of a 4-3 game, but not without playing their hearts out. Jeff Jamieson opened the scoring with a slap shot off the face-off win by Greg Thompson. Lindsay scored twice more before the end of the period and then both teams remained scoreless for the second. Twenty seconds into the third period Todd Parry tied up the game with the assist to Matt Hobbs. With only two minutes left in the game Lindsay got the go ahead goal Lindsay was able to score once more into our open net, and despite a valiant effort by Jon Jamieson who scored with only 12 seconds left, the "Stars" were not able to tie up the game. Gord Bentley assisted on Jon's goal Jamie Trick played another good game in net for Port: The goaltending for Lindsay has been spectacular throughout this series and probably part of the reason they are advancing on to the All- Ontario championship. The boys and coaching staff of Pete Christie, Jamie Menzies and Troy Glazier, and manager Sandra Trick, the parents would like to say, "thanks for a good year." We know the boys enjoyed a season of good hockey, good friends and a lot of fun! Ivory Forest Belles Ringette The Ivory Forest Belles, hot off their Prelim win, travelled ta Woolwich, where they got off to a disappointing start by going down to defeat to a fast skating North Bay team. However, Port put forth a determined effort and kept sauna, dining rooms, family room and fully equipped kitchen. Small Groups up to 30 are Welcome. Megan Marlowe and Val Payne teamed up to allow Jen Smith to fire in Port's first goal. Some hard work around the net by Megan and Jen put Val Payne in position to slip in number two. With less than two minutes remaining in the first period Karen Kett bounced two markers off the twine. Both girls were scored on very nice passing plays from Port's defensive end. Kim Poppleton, Melanie Demmer, Tanya Towns and Amy Parliament were awarded well deserved assists. Port's fifth and final effort was tallied by Jen Smith who blasted the ring into the net on a solo effort. The final buzzer saw Port trailing by a 8-5 score. Port's second game was against the host team. This proved to be a very frustrating game for Port, for although they blasted the Woolwich goaltender with shot after shot, they could not find the net any more than three times. Jen Smith hooked in two of Port's goals with Karen Kett getting the additional marker. Assists went to Tanya Towns, Michelle Fitzpatrick, Val Payne and Megan Marlowe. Final: Port 3 - Woolwich 4. When the final buzzer sounded Megan Marlowe sustained an injury. Megan is now sporting a sling and her expertise will be sorely missed by her team mates The following game pitted Port Perry against Markham in what unfolded to be something of a shoot out. During the last 10 minutes the scoring seesawed back and forth with the outcome being decided with 32 seconds remaining in the game. It was a draw. Port made some driving plays to total up 12 goals. Karen Kett drove in four markers with Val Payne nipping in three. Kim Poppleton and Amy Parliament rattled the mesh with two each Leea Kinnunen flew in to round out the scoring with a single shot. Jen Smith earned three assists while doubles went to Kim, Val, Michelle, Tanya and Karen. Singles went to out to Amy and Melanie. Final score 12-12. Sunday morning, Port once again faced Markham to battle for third place in the tournament. Port took to the ice with only nine skaters. Megan Marlowe remained sidelined and was joined by Tanya Towns who was suffering a knee injury. Port went to work early in the game and fired in the first goal of the game on a two girl rush by Kim Poppleton and Karen Kett. Karen and Kim continued to connect on some well thought out passing plays to result in Port's second goal by Amy Parliament. Amy and Kim then teamed up to get the ring over to Michelle Fitzpatrick who deftly flipped the ring behind the netminder. Jen Smith whipped across the ice surface to startle the goaltender with goal number four. Karen Kett provided Port with some breathing space as she slipped in Port's fifth goal from a prone position in front of the net. Amy Parliament and Melanie Deinmer earned assists. Leea Kinnunen and Michelle Fitzpatrick performed their jobs well as they set up in front of Port's net. Tracy Pelow did an admirable job between the pipes to help Port Perry win the game by a 5-3 score, earning Port a third place in the tournament and becoming the winners in the consolation game.
